Japan’s Metaplanet Accumulates 5,000 BTC With a Plan That Probably Sounds Too Good to Be True
Once a humble hotel developer, Metaplanet, the Japanese bitcoin treasury firm, has now reached the not-so-humble milestone of 5,000 bitcoins. And this is just the beginning, mind you. The firm’s corporate goal is to reach a staggering 21,000 BTC by 2026. After all, why stop at 5,000 when 21,000 is just a mere hop, skip, and a leap away?
In a plot twist that could rival any financial thriller, Metaplanet has teamed up with Evolution Financial Group. Together, they’re making money appear out of thin air (or, more specifically, out of zero-coupon bonds). Metaplanet issues these bonds to Evo, which in return gives them some capital to purchase more bitcoin. But wait, there’s more! They also issue stock acquisition rights, meaning Evo can buy Metaplanet shares later at the prior day’s closing price. So Metaplanet is basically paying off its debt with its own stock. Clever, huh?
Now, Evo gets the sweet taste of arbitrage (that’s a fancy word for making money while doing very little). As analyst Johan Bergman pointed out, this strategy could lead to a compounded annual return of up to 20%—and all without breaking a sweat. Meanwhile, Metaplanet’s bitcoin stash keeps growing, now sitting pretty at 5,000 BTC after just one year of this strategy. A year. Seriously, if this was a race, Metaplanet would be lapping everyone else.
And for those of you wondering about the company’s next move, Metaplanet’s CEO Simon Gerovich made it clear: “Let it be said of April 24, 2025: Metaplanet claimed its 5,000th bitcoin, not with noise, but with purpose.” Because, you know, why do something with noise when you can do it with purpose?
