In challenging top-down adventures, gaining experience and collecting currency are essential for survival and progress – and Mina the Hollower is no different.
However, the game does offer some interesting twists. The developers at Yacht Club Games cleverly combined experience points and in-game currency, meaning you use the same resources for both leveling up and purchasing items. This requires players to carefully manage their money, deciding whether to invest in Mina’s abilities or save up for weapons and tools.
The game uses a unique currency called Bones – and they’re actual bones you dig up as you explore! You’ll find them hidden all over the map, often in secret spots or buried underground. While these Bones automatically collect into your inventory, carrying too many is risky. Like many challenging games, if you die, you could lose everything you’re carrying unless you manage to return to where you fell and reclaim it.
You’ll sometimes find large, golden diamonds called Bonestones, which give you a lot of Bones at once. These diamonds aren’t kept in your inventory; instead, they’re automatically sent to a secure deposit box in your Underlab, a safe space and checkpoint for Mina.
Let’s face it, keeping track of your money can be complicated, and budgeting isn’t always easy. Eventually, you’ll likely find yourself needing a large sum of Bones quickly in a tight spot.
I’ve learned the hard way how to manage money in Ossex, so you won’t have to! I’m sharing the most effective ways to quickly earn a lot of Bones in Mina the Hollower.
How to Turn Mina into a Bone Magnet

You can get Bones by defeating enemies, but there’s a special trick you can use early on to get even more!
To get started, progress the main story until Mina encounters Lionel in the Radiant Manor Foyer in Ossex. After Lionel tells you that your main goal is to fix the city’s generators, you’ll be able to freely explore the game world.
Before you go anywhere, quickly return to the courtyard of the Radiant Manor Foyer. Look at the upper-right corner of the screen – you’ll find a secret passage hidden behind some tall grass. Clear away the grass and go inside to meet Elizabeth, a mysterious skeletal character.
If you speak with Elizabeth, she’ll generously offer to lend you one of her skulls as collateral for a loan. Since she’s a skeleton, she has extras! However, there’s a fee: she’ll want 1,000 Bones back as repayment – that’s with interest.
Don’t be fooled by how it sounds – this loan is definitely a good idea, so take it. After you receive the money, exit Ossex through the east gate to reach the Eastern Heath. Continue heading right (if the bridge isn’t open yet, simply take the lower path to unlock it) until you find the entrance to Mourner’s Mile. This path will eventually lead you to the Queensbury Crypt, where you’ll face a major boss in the game.
Right now, concentrate on exploring the Mourner’s Mile, the area filled with dangerous creatures. Enemies here drop a good amount of currency when defeated. Collect 1,000 Bones to pay off your debt to Elizabeth. Once you do, she’ll get a new, improved head and give you the Deboning Wand as a reward. This special item will make enemies drop significantly more Bones after you defeat them.
The Deboning Wand is great, but it does make bones fly around when you get them. Luckily, you can fix this by using it with the Stolenoid Trinket.
The Stolenoid is a useful item that makes Mina act like a magnet, automatically collecting all nearby Bone fragments so you don’t have to search for them. You can buy it from Belvedere for 600 Bones. He’s located in a secret chamber within the Queensbury Crypt, just before the boss fight. Look for an area with two broken statues, and you can dig through the left pillar to reach his shop.
Finally, to finish setting up our fast-money strategy, we just need to expand Mina’s Trinket Bag so she can use two Trinkets at once. You can buy this upgrade at the Emporium from the Provisioner, who’s located in the center of Ossex. Do one last bit of collecting to get the funds, and then we’ll be all set!
The Best Farming Route for Early Game
Now that you have this strong Trinket setup, you’re ready to start earning a lot of money! A quick way to do this, available early in the game, is to repeatedly clear the Mourner’s Mile up to the Queensbury Crypt entrance. The enemies in this area already give good rewards, but the Deboning Wand will significantly increase your earnings.
Here’s a breakdown of how much you’ll earn on this run. You’ll get 40 Bones for each goblin, 30 for each blue crow, and 25 for each half mummy. Digging up the seven graves will also earn you 50 Bones per grave. The biggest rewards come from the three armored knights, worth 120 Bones each, and the two horned beasts near the crypt entrance, which give you 150 Bones apiece.

Completing this route once takes about two minutes and earns you around 1,400 Bones. If you repeat this loop for ten minutes, you can earn approximately 7,000 Bones! This is a huge amount early in the game, letting you quickly level up Mina’s health and damage before facing the first big boss.
This method is useful for a significant portion of the game. If you find a costly item at a shop, spending about ten minutes following this route will easily cover the expense and fix any money troubles you have!
