Morrowind in Elden Ring mod is now “mostly playable”, despite the fact its creator’s “entire existence has been consumed with interpreting gibberish code”

Some longtime readers of RPS may recall my articles last year about a modder trying to bring Morrowind into the world of Elden Ring. Their initial work showed potential, though it faced several significant technical challenges that needed to be overcome.

After a six-month period without updates, modder InfernoPlus announced that their mod is now “mostly playable.” This comes after several months of resolving some very difficult technical problems.

The Most Complex Mod Ever Created

So, I just wanted to give everyone an update on the InfernoPlus mod. Things are going way better than I expected! I honestly thought some of the stuff we were trying to do was impossible, but we’ve actually managed to pull it off. The game is at a point where you can actually play through a good chunk of it now, which is awesome. It’s not finished yet, of course, but what we’ve built so far is really shaping up to be something special. I showed off some of the quests in the video, and I’m super excited about how they’re coming along.

This mod is transforming Morrowind from a world populated by basic characters into a more immersive game. NPCs now have varied appearances, offer appropriate services, and engage in conversations. Key features like a functional crime system with pursuing guards, an alchemy system inspired by Elden Ring’s crafting, and a persuasion minigame are all coming together, though they still need some refinement. The port also offers support for many existing Morrowind mods, including the popular Balmora Burger Franchise.

The development process wasn’t easy. The team at InfernoPlus faced significant challenges, including creating a map editor that pieced together Elden Ring’s world from smaller images, dealing with the complicated way FromSoftware manages audio files, and having to reverse-engineer the game’s code just to start working with its navigation system. They also struggled with the complex process of compiling dialogue and scripts. One particularly difficult task involved recreating the entire NPC behavior system from Morrowind within Elden Ring. This required using a tool called JortPob to automatically generate code in two programming languages, which was then compiled and packaged for the game. While it took only 15 seconds to describe, the process actually took three months to complete, and that was just one hurdle among many.

The modder clarified that while the mod is now mostly functional, it’s not yet enjoyable. A significant amount of work remains focused on balancing the gameplay and refining the design. For instance, the potions created through alchemy aren’t currently aligned with the stats of the original game; a single potion can grant an unrealistically high boost to strength. There’s still a lot to do, including manually placing enemies, designing boss rooms, creating unique character appearances, adding voice acting, and implementing features like lockpicking, so the mod isn’t expected to be released anytime soon.

Things are progressing well, as long as the development team keeps up their hard work and overcomes the challenges ahead.
