Following three years of continuous improvements, the game Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is gearing up to launch its first significant expansion, titled War Sails, towards the end of this year. Although the main game has consistently garnered acclaim for its intricate land-based strategy and combat, the upcoming expansion, War Sails, brings a substantial overhaul that promises to transport players onto the seas in what appears to be the most expansive downloadable content (DLC) for Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord yet.
Upon its release in 2022, following two years in early access, Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord presented a sprawling sandbox brimming with medieval combat, kingdom-building, and RPG narratives, all set resolutely on land. Since then, TaleWorlds Entertainment has consistently improved the gaming experience of Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord through refinements and content enhancements. However, one feature that fans have been clamoring for since its debut is naval gameplay within Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord.
In autumn 2025, TaleWorlds will significantly fulfill those long-awaited requests with “War Sails”. This expansion primarily focuses on a comprehensive revamp of “Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord’s” world. TaleWorlds is introducing a vast northern coastline, featuring the new region of Nordvyg, the icy Jumne river valley, and the barren Island of Beinland. The game map will not only be expanded but also restructured. Wider rivers for seamless ship travel, towns near water, and redesigned bridges to maintain land routes’ relevance amidst thriving maritime trade networks are some of the changes being made.
Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord War Sails DLC Will Introduce In-Depth Naval Gameplay Mechanics
In the War Sails DLC expansion for Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord, naval travel and warfare will be key gameplay elements. Players will have the opportunity to acquire, enhance, and command ships, build fleets, and even employ naval blockades during coastal sieges. The blockades themselves offer a variety of engaging mechanisms; for instance, an attacking player can isolate reinforcements and maritime trade by seizing control of the sea, while defenders may try to break the blockade using their own fleets or backup forces.
Ships are vulnerable to the forces of wind and current, making them susceptible to damage or even destruction when sailed during storms or carrying excessive cargo. TaleWorlds has implemented dynamic storm systems that move across the sea, offering opportunities for brave maneuvers around or through hurricanes, depending on a ship’s seaworthiness. As such, it appears that War Sails, an upcoming naval combat expansion for Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord, is not just an add-on but a significant overhaul of the game’s mechanics and environment to accommodate this new feature. Fans can look forward to experiencing TaleWorlds’ expansive reimagining of the game when the DLC launches in the latter half of 2025.
