Ah, Dan Ives, the oracle of technology research at Wedbush Securities, has spoken! He believes that the idea of Apple moving its iPhone production back to the good ol’ US of A is about as realistic as a three-legged unicorn winning the Grand National. 🦄
In a recent tête-à-tête with CNBC, our dear investor pointed out that Apple has been quite clever, like a fox in a library, by setting up shop in India. This little maneuver helps them diversify their supply chain and, more importantly, reduces their reliance on China. Because, let’s face it, nobody wants to be the last one at the party when the music stops. 🎉
But wait! With President Trump brandishing the threat of 25% tariffs on iPhones made outside the US like a sword of Damocles, Ives suggests that Apple investors are now caught in a bit of a pickle. And not the delicious kind you find in a jar. He doesn’t think it’s feasible for the tech giant to uproot its global supply chain faster than a cat can knock over a glass of water. 🐱💦
“It’s a Pinocchio story – the reality of actually having iPhone production in the US. Because in my opinion, that will take four to five years, $20 to $30 billion, even to move 15% to 20% of the supply chain. And then if you actually produce the iPhone in the US, you’d be looking at $3,500 iPhones.”
So, in the grand saga of Apple, they’ve tried to pivot around India, which was a stroke of genius, and now they find themselves with their backs against the wall. It was a Twilight Zone day for any Apple investor, given that Apple has done all the right things in terms of pivoting out of China, and now they’re saying, “Come to the US” – that’s a fairy tale.”
