As an analyst with over two decades of experience in the tech and finance industries, I’ve witnessed firsthand the meteoric rise of Bitcoin and Elon Musk’s pivotal role in its journey. Six years ago, I was still wrapping my head around smartphones becoming ubiquitous, and here we were debating the potential of a digital currency on Twitter.
Six years ago, exactly, Tesla CEO Elon Musk posed a question to his 23 million Twitter followers: Would they be interested in purchasing Bitcoin?
The question was accompanied by a picture of an anime-style character in a Bitcoin-branded dress.
Previously, there were suspicions leading Musk’s Twitter account to be temporarily suspended, as people questioned if the tycoon had indeed been hacked.
2022 marked the first time Musk publicly mentioned the significant social media platform that he eventually purchased.
The price of the cryptocurrency has surged by roughly 1,000% since then. It is currently trading at around $67,328, according to CoinGecko data.
Following over a year of absence, Musk returned to discussing Bitcoin on Twitter in January 2020, using a lighthearted and humorous tone.
In the beginning of 2021, Elon Musk’s company Tesla invested around 1.5 billion dollars in Bitcoin, significantly boosting the crypto market and propelling its value past the $50,000 mark for the first occasion.
Initially, the billionaire appeared to be a strong supporter of Bitcoin, but later expressed reservations but stopping Tesla from accepting it as payment because of environmental concerns. Subsequently, Musk often engaged in discussions with pro-Bitcoin enthusiasts on Twitter. Furthermore, in 2021, Musk confirmed that he was not the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi.
His last tweet that mentions “Bitcoin” dates back to May 2022.
This month, Musk finally spoke up about cryptocurrencies, stating that they support “personal liberty.
According to U.Today’s report, there’s been a transfer of Bitcoin from Tesla to unidentified wallets, sparking debate among observers over whether Tesla might be selling off the rest of its Bitcoin assets.
