The Dark Ages of the Steam Medieval Fest 2026 Arrived And Come With Some Great Sales
Get ready for swords, shields, and strategy! The Steam Medieval Fest 2026 begins today, April 20th at 10:00 AM PDT, and runs until April 27th. We’re celebrating a week of medieval games, from grand strategy to tactical battles. I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite strategy games that I highly recommend. Plus, this is the first time games from Wargame Design Studio will be on sale – great news for fans of classic hex-and-counter wargames!
I’ve played most of these games, so I’ve included links to my reviews if you’d like a more detailed look to help you decide if they’re a good match for your tastes.
Age Of Empires 4
Age of Empires 4 is a fantastic game and, in my opinion, the second best in the series, only surpassed by Age of Empires 2. It successfully updates the classic formula while keeping what makes the series great. Each civilization feels unique, and the single-player campaigns are excellent. My only complaint is that I wish there was more downloadable content available. While the $20 price tag is a little high, it’s a worthwhile purchase, especially if you’re looking for a fresh single-player experience after playing the other Age of Empires titles.
Crusades: Book I & Crusades: Book II
For the first time ever, the Wargame Design Studio titles are on sale on Steam! Crusades: Book I & Crusades: Book II are classic, turn-based strategy games aiming for incredibly realistic medieval combat. I previously called Book I one of the best medieval games ever created, and Chris’s review of Book II showed that it’s just as excellent as the original.
Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition
Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is widely considered the greatest real-time strategy game ever made, and it takes place in the Middle Ages. We’re incredibly fortunate to have it!
Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition
Often considered one of the greatest real-time strategy games ever, Stronghold Crusader takes place in medieval times and emphasizes building impressive castles and launching powerful sieges. The original game is a beloved classic, and the Definitive Edition makes it even better with updated graphics, music, smarter opponents, and new missions.
