Throughout the many seasons of the Naruto anime, several characters have died, but Jiraiya’s death was particularly impactful. He was Naruto Uzumaki’s most important teacher and played a crucial role in the overall story. His final battle, fought while using his powerful Sage Mode, was a moving moment for fans, as depicted in chapters 40-42 of the manga. Now, his Sage Mode abilities are set to reappear in the upcoming Naruto project.
After 18 years, Jiraiya’s powerful Sage Form is finally available in the video game Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker. Players can now play as Jiraiya and experience his abilities during the iconic battle against Pain.
Jiraiya’s Sage Mode Is Making A Comeback With Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker In DLC #48
Jiraiya is a hugely popular character in the Naruto series. He first appeared in chapter 90 of the manga, published on September 10, 2001, and remains a fan favorite. As one of Konohagakure’s Legendary Sannin, Jiraiya was an incredibly strong ninja. He trained some of the most famous ninjas ever, including Nagato, Minato, and Naruto Uzumaki.
Jiraiya earned his legendary status thanks to Sage Mode, a powerful ability that let him draw energy from nature. While using it, he gained incredible strength and took on characteristics of a toad, as the transformation wasn’t perfect. Sage Mode amplified his existing skills, like the Rasengan, and unlocked new, potent ones. Though Jiraiya lost his life during the fight with Pain, his Sage Mode form is temporarily returning in the game Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker. It’s available now as part of DLC #48, released on May 29, 2026, and players can even unlock a younger version of Jiraiya in this powerful state, which is great news for fans.
Jiraiya’s Sage Mode Makes Its Entrance Against Pain With Iconic Moves
Bandai Namco Entertainment released a short teaser trailer on May 28, 2026, showcasing the recently added Jiraiya character in Sage Mode. The trailer introduces Jiraiya and features a battle against Pain, a well-known villain from Naruto. This matchup is a nod to the original series where Jiraiya fought Pain in Amegakure, hoping to defeat the Akatsuki. While Jiraiya lost that battle in the anime and manga, players will now have the chance to change the outcome in the game.
The new video trailer highlights some of Jiraiya’s most famous Sage Mode techniques. You’ll see moves like Sage Art: Bath of Boiling Oil, where he covers the area in hot oil to burn opponents, and Sage Art: Frog Song, which lets him use Fukasaku and Shima to cast Genjutsu with his summons. His strongest move, Secret Technique, Demonic Illusion: Gamarinsho, is also featured – a powerful sound-based Genjutsu delivered with the help of his summons. Excitingly, even Jiraiya’s younger appearance can use all these techniques, as it’s just a character skin. You can watch the action-packed trailer now on Bandai Namco’s official YouTube channel.

Jiraiya’s Return In the Boruto Series Through Kashin Koji
Jiraiya’s death is a particularly heartbreaking moment in the Naruto series, occurring in chapter 383, titled “The Final Chapter, and…!!,” which was published on January 21, 2008. What makes his death so impactful is that while several characters were temporarily brought back to life during the Fourth Great Ninja War, Jiraiya remained deceased.
Though the story moves forward without him, Jiraiya’s influence lives on. Most notably, his legacy continues through Naruto Uzumaki, his student who became a powerful ninja, achieved the rank of Hokage, fulfilled a crucial prophecy, and ultimately brought peace to the world.
Isshiki Otsutsuki, in Boruto Chapter 47, declared to Kashin Koji—a clone of the legendary Jiraiya—that his fate was sealed by his very DNA, and he would die there.
Although Jiraiya passed away, a clone of him named Kashin Koji appeared in the Boruto series. Created using Jiraiya’s DNA by Amado, Koji isn’t the original, but he carries on Jiraiya’s spirit. Koji has become a key ally, directly training Boruto Uzumaki and helping to defend the world against the Otsutsuki and Shinju.
All the chapters of Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto are available to read via Viz Media and Manga Plus.
