This week, we shared news about the job cuts affecting the Marvel Rivals team at NetEase. Surprisingly, a whole department in North America was let go, even as Marvel Rivals continues to thrive and gain momentum.
Recently, a new report by Stephen Totilo of Game File sheds light on the current predicament facing gaming powerhouse NetEase. In recent times, this industry leader has found itself in troubled waters, and studios that it either established or invested in have begun to face staff reductions and shutdowns. One such example is Liquid Swords, which recently announced job cuts as well.
According to Totilo’s report, the full extent of the destruction hasn’t been revealed yet, but it seems that over a dozen studios might have to shut down.
‘Constant Review and Evaluation’
According to the latest report from Game Files, it’s important to note that NetEase’s cost-cutting measures are not limited to Liquid Swords and the Marvel Rivals team.
It was stressed by Stephen Totilo:
According to two sources who are knowledgeable about NetEase’s activities, NetEase is actively exploring acquisitions of more studios outside China – many of which were previously announced by the company over the past three years. However, neither source was granted authorization to discuss these plans publicly.
It’s been reported that NetEase plans to sell off its ‘overseas teams’, a move which could potentially shut down over a dozen game development studios worldwide. The predicament could worsen if these studios fail to find alternative financing after being let go by NetEase.
It’s not surprising that NetEase didn’t respond directly to these rumors, but what was said is that the company and its studios are always undergoing evaluation and assessment. They plan to decide on any necessary adjustments.
Over the course of a year, Embracer Group made significant changes by letting go of over 4,500 staff members, terminating approximately 80 projects, and even closing down some highly productive studios. To some degree, this pattern might resemble what’s happening with NetEase.
The Chinese gaming corporation ranks fifth in terms of revenue, following Nintendo and slightly surpassing Electronic Arts. This company boasts approximately 30,000 employees, which raises some concern due to its significant size.
Among my top worries is Rebel Wolves, a company that NetEase invested in last year. Lately, this Polish studio has unveiled Blood of Dawnwalker, an enticing game developed by ex-Witcher team members. This could potentially be one of the studios affected by these recent developments.
For now, everything remains up in the air.
