Never Before Seen Dragon Ball Super Art Confirms the Manga’s Future

The Dragon Ball Super manga hasn’t been updated for over two years, and there’s been no indication it would return – monthly reports from V Jump have consistently confirmed its continued hiatus. However, the Spanish release of Dragon Ball Super Volume 24 may have accidentally revealed artwork that proves the series will continue. The Spanish publisher, Planeta Cómic, included new artwork on the spine of their version of Volume 24 that wasn’t present in the original Japanese release.

The spine artwork for the latest volumes will continue the design from Volume 23, featuring Saganbo and the back of Moro. The Planeta Cómic editions of Volumes 23 and 24 expand this artwork to show Shimorekka and Seven-Three seemingly being absorbed by Moro in his Angel form, or possibly being grabbed by the Heeters. This confirms that Toyotarou has created spine art covering at least two volumes, which translates to a minimum of eight chapters of Dragon Ball Super.

Dragon Ball Super Volume 24’s Spanish Release Features New Spine Art Drawn By Toyotarou

Dragon Ball Super Volume 24 gathers chapters 101-104 of the manga, bringing the physical copies up to date with the latest four chapters from Toyotarou – a wait of almost a year since Volume 23. Interestingly, even the Japanese release of Volume 24 has incomplete artwork on the spine, showing an unfinished image of Moro and Saganbo. The release by Planeta Cómic confirms that Toyotarou has already designed spine art for future volumes, indicating that more chapters of Dragon Ball Super are in the works.

The latest cover art depicts Seven-Three being pulled back by a blue hand, likely belonging to one of the Heeters. Given that each volume of Dragon Ball Super currently covers four chapters, Toyotarou plans to draw at least eight more chapters—possibly more, as he still needs to reveal who is grabbing Seven-Three. If this continues, the Black Frieza Saga could last a full year, or even longer.

The Final Battle With Black Frieza is Nigh

With the Dragon Ball Super manga set to continue, fans are anticipating the final showdown between the Z-Fighters and Black Frieza. The cover art for Volume 24 hints at this upcoming battle, featuring the main characters at their peak strength on the front and a threatening Black Frieza on the back. By looking at the spine artwork of the manga, fans can even try to predict how long the Black Frieza Saga will last.

Each book in the series contains four chapters. Planeta Cómico has revealed new artwork for the spine of the books, showing scenes from eight chapters. Volume 25 of Dragon Ball Super will probably feature Elec, completing a twelve-chapter arc. However, it’s unlikely the spine art will showcase all the Heeter characters. The original Dragon Ball manga ended its spine art with a picture of Super Saiyan Goku, so we can expect at least one or two more volumes to feature Ultra Instinct Goku on the spine as well.

The yellow line appearing in the spine art since Volume 8 is a nod to Goku’s pink Nimbus Cloud from the original Dragon Ball manga. This suggests that future volumes of Dragon Ball Super will likely show Uub riding the Nimbus, mirroring the ending of the Dragon Ball Kanzenban edition. If the manga continues for six more volumes and 24 chapters, there’s plenty of room for Toyotarou to adapt the Black Frieza Saga, bring the story up to the Peaceful World Saga from the end of Dragon Ball Z, and ultimately finish the series.
