Recently, Jagex announced details about a new venture they’ve been developing – RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Initially, they had given a rather vague timeline for its release, saying “this spring,” but now, that vagueness has been clarified.
Today’s the perfect time! Feel free to head over to Steam and grab the game straight away. Following the tradition of a stealth release, excitement has been kept under wraps, allowing players to dive right into the gameplay experience.
As a seasoned RuneScaper, diving into Dragonwilds feels like stepping back into familiar territory, yet enhanced with exciting new features. I’m talking about survival elements, setting up my own base, scavenging resources, and crafting items to my heart’s content. It’s an open-world adventure that keeps the essence of RuneScape alive, but with a fresh twist!
As you advance and gather resources to equip yourself, you’ll consistently find your progress challenged by the ever-present menace of Dragons. By tracking their devastation across the land and solving the continent’s enigmas, you’ll discover not only how to battle the Dragons but also how to conquer them.
In the world of Ashenfall, you and your comrades embark on an expedition, initially experiencing a shipwreck as a means of arrival. Upon reaching your destination, however, an unforeseen attack by dragon-like creatures poses a threat. To ensure survival, you’ll need to transform into formidable dragonslayers through grit and determination.

In the game “RuneScape: Dragonwilds,” it’s designed for teamwork with other players, allowing you to extend invitations to your friends to journey together and advance simultaneously through the adventure in Ashenfall.
On the game’s Steam store page, it states that “Dragonwilds in RuneScape began its Alpha testing towards the end of 2024 and is now moving into Early Access.” The dedicated development team behind this project is actively gathering player input to shape its progress.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds Is An Unexpected Release With An Unexpected Problem

It’s clear that many folks haven’t anticipated Dragonwilds, as it presents a fresh adventure from top to bottom. However, there’s a specific aspect that has sparked some annoyance: To enjoy the game online, you’ll need to create an Epic Games account.
Indeed, having an Epic account is necessary for a Steam launch, but let me clarify that the game itself isn’t accessible through the Epic Games Store. Instead, they want you to create an Epic account and connect it to your existing Steam account.
The game allows you to play offline without requiring an Epic account, which means you can skip the hassle if you prefer. However, opting out of the multiplayer aspect in a multiplayer survival-crafting game is quite significant.
Dragonwilds doesn’t require much more than the initial setup, and there are no additional fees involved, but fans have expressed disappointment in similar situations. For instance, the PC version of God of War: Ragnarok required a PlayStation Network account from its Steam users, which was met with resistance.
Steam reviews haven’t been posted for RuneScape: Dragonwilds as of now, but any issues related to intrusiveness in gameplay will likely be addressed there.
