Good news for fans of Mortal Kombat: a new game is officially in development, confirmed by the series director, Ed Boon. However, there’s no confirmed release date just yet.
Following the news that future downloadable content for MK1 was cancelled—reportedly because the ‘Khaos Reigns’ expansion didn’t perform well with either sales numbers or fan reception—players were eager to know what NetherRealm had planned next for the Mortal Kombat series. Given the success of the base game and the franchise’s current popularity thanks to the recent movies, another installment was inevitable. Thankfully, it appears a new Mortal Kombat game will likely be one of the next two projects from the developers.
Mortal Kombat’s Next Entry is Already in the Works
In a recent interview with Collider, NetherRealm Studios’ Ed Boon confirmed the team is working on a new Mortal Kombat game. However, he couldn’t share any details, saying he’d risk getting into trouble if he did. He also mentioned that the studio has more projects in development beyond Mortal Kombat. Many fans are hoping for a new Injustice game, and leaks over the past few years suggest one is underway. It’s possible Injustice could be released before the next Mortal Kombat, as it’s reportedly been in development for a while. Ultimately, it’s unclear which game will come out first.

The story of the next Mortal Kombat game is currently unknown. The previous game, Khaos Reigns, concluded the storyline involving Havok, though fans are still wondering about the villain’s ultimate fate. This opens the door for a new antagonist. With NetherRealm Studios having creative freedom over the narrative – though a complete reboot seems unlikely given the recent establishment of Fire God Liu Kang’s universe – it will be interesting to see what direction they take the story.
I’m really curious to see what NetherRealm does with the gameplay in the next Mortal Kombat game. It feels like they might completely revamp things, almost starting from scratch. I’m wondering if they’ll keep the Kameo system, or if it’ll go the way of the gear system and be left behind. Please, no more Invasions mode – that one didn’t land well! But bringing back a classic Krypt? That would be amazing and fans would absolutely love it. I’m also hoping the next game avoids all the controversy MK1 had with the Switch version and those microtransactions – that was just bad publicity and really hurt the game.

While fans eagerly await the next video game, they can enjoy the Mortal Kombat 2 movie, featuring Karl Urban’s first appearance as Johnny Cage. This isn’t the only thing NetherRealm Studios is working on; Ed Boon has hinted at other projects in various forms of entertainment beyond gaming.
