New PlayStation Live-Service Game is Reportedly Yet Another Extraction Shooter

Sony and PlayStation have been increasingly focused on games that offer ongoing, live experiences. Recent rumors suggest their next attempt might be an “extraction shooter” called Fairgames, where players complete heists and try to escape with loot. PlayStation’s efforts in this area have had mixed results so far, but Fairgames could be their newest offering in this popular game style.

Extraction shooters have become increasingly popular lately. The release of ARC Raiders showed that this type of game could appeal to a much broader audience. While games like Escape From Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown 1896 previously defined the genre, ARC Raiders’ success suggests extraction shooters might become the next major trend in gaming. Sony recently joined the scene with Bungie’s Marathon, and this could be just the beginning.

New Leaks Claim That Fairgames is Going to Be PlayStation’s Next Extraction Shooter

Recent leaks obtained by Insider Gaming suggest that Fairgames is the next project Sony is developing as an extraction shooter. The leaked documents indicate Fairgames will feature its own extraction mode, rather than being a completely new game in the genre. Playtesting of Fairgames hasn’t gone well, with feedback reportedly being negative. Despite a difficult development process, Sony continues to invest in the game.

While the total number of game modes for Fairgames is still unknown, leaked information suggests one mode, called “Cargo Heist,” will involve a thrilling extraction-style mission. Players will reportedly need to locate a vault code, crack a safe, gather cash for improvements, and either steal or intercept cargo. Once they have the cargo, they’ll need to reach an extraction point and wait for a ride. It will be interesting to see how popular “Cargo Heist”—and potentially other modes—are with fans of extraction shooters. Fairgames may also face competition from other upcoming heist games, such as Den of Wolves, particularly if both games are released around the same time.

Fairgames is expected to be free-to-play.

More extraction shooter games are being released, and it could benefit Fairgames to include this mode as just one part of the game, rather than making it the entire focus. While the extraction shooter market isn’t as crowded as the battle royale scene once was, it’s still quite competitive. Even good extraction games like Marathon haven’t reached the popularity of others, such as ARC Raiders.

According to the source, Haven Interactive Studios plans to run another test of their game this weekend, which could lead to more details being revealed by players. The game, known as Fairgames, has faced a lot of challenges during development, including the departure of studio founder Jade Raymond last year. While Sony has had success with live-service games like Helldivers 2 and Marathon, the failure of Concord and the cancellation of The Last of Us Online – along with other similar projects – creates significant pressure for Fairgames to succeed.
