New PS5 Game Has Serious Metal Gear Solid 1 Vibes, and It’s Releasing This Month

The indie action game Spy Drops, heavily inspired by the classic Metal Gear Solid, is coming to PS5 on a confirmed date. This release will bring the game to PlayStation consoles, a fitting home considering the Metal Gear Solid series also began on PlayStation.

The original Metal Gear Solid made a huge impact when it launched with the first PlayStation, transforming the older Metal Gear games into a 3D spy thriller focused on stealth. It quickly became the signature series for game designer Hideo Kojima, and has since grown into a large franchise with five main games, plus several spin-offs and remakes. A Metal Gear Solid movie is finally happening, confirmed for April 2026, and will be directed by the team behind the 2025 film Final Destination: Bloodlines, marking the first time the series will be adapted for the big screen.

Metal Gear Solid-Inspired Action Title Spy Drops Comes to PS5 on April 28

The stealth action game Spy Drops, heavily influenced by the original Metal Gear Solid, is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on April 28, 2026. It first launched on Steam and Nintendo Switch in July 2025, and the versions for PlayStation and Xbox will include several enhancements and gameplay adjustments made since the initial release.

Konami has been suggesting new versions of Metal Gear Solid games might be coming, potentially updating the graphics and gameplay. Spy Drops, however, deliberately uses old-school, blocky graphics to look like the original 1998 PlayStation game. It even shares the same colors and overhead perspective, which fans will recognize. Unlike its inspiration, Spy Drops creates new, random missions each time you play, keeping things fresh. The story revolves around a group of eco-terrorists trying to wipe out all digital information, effectively disconnecting the world from technology.

Currently, the Steam page for Spy Drops shows a Mixed reception from players. The game has undergone several changes since its initial release, including replacing the AI-generated voice acting with performances from real actors. New features have also been added, such as standalone missions outside the main story, improved camera controls, visual enhancements, and bug fixes. These updates could lead to a more positive response as the game becomes available on additional consoles.
