Today, Nintendo announced the introduction of Virtual Game Cards: a modern method for effortlessly transferring digital games between two Nintendo Switch consoles. This innovative feature is designed to ensure that games bought digitally are just as adaptable and hassle-free as traditional physical game cards.
Nintendo Switch Users Can Share and Lend Digital Games via Virtual Game Cards
Today in a Nintendo Direct, it was announced that starting with future purchases, games for the Nintendo Switch will be digitally delivered as Virtual Game Cards. These cards can be transferred to another Nintendo Switch system (under the same account) via an internet connection, similar to the process of loading and ejecting a physical game card. The initial link between the two systems is only required locally once, while an internet connection is needed only during the transfer process itself. Additionally, this new feature is expected to allow for exchanging Virtual Game Cards between a Nintendo Switch and a potential future Nintendo Switch 2 system.
For family group managers using the new Virtual Game Cards, you’ll find additional benefits. These cards can temporarily be borrowed by fellow members of your Nintendo account’s family group, though they’ll automatically revert back to your Switch after a fortnight. It’s worth noting that a single game loan is only possible with one family member at a time. Moreover, the linked Switches must have been connected locally prior to exchanging games.
Starting from late April, a new feature will be installed through an update. This update is great news for parents who own more than one Nintendo Switch, as they won’t need to handle multiple game libraries and purchases anymore. Instead, they can focus on managing just their personal library and share their Virtual Game Cards with other family members in their group.
