Nintendo Has Explained Why The Nintendo Switch 2 is so Expensive

As a devoted fan, I’ve been buzzing with excitement ever since the Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled in a captivating, extended showcase. However, one topic that has sparked heated discussions among us fans is the cost of this new device and its games. With an initial price tag of $450 for the console itself, and some games reaching as high as $90, it’s no wonder our wallets are feeling a bit light. It’s only natural that we’re feeling apprehensive about these prices.

During a previous interview (before the delay in U.S. pre-orders due to tariffs), a vice president from Nintendo discussed the reason behind the high price of the upcoming Switch 2. This explanation aimed to make sense of a cost that, in my opinion, is generally comprehensible.

‘Inflation is Affecting Everything’

The chat between Polygon and Bill Trinen, Nintendo’s Vice President of Player & Product Experience, provided some insight into what Nintendo might be planning for the potential pricing of the Switch 2.

Trinen was upfront and explained:

Unfortunately, we’re currently experiencing times where I believe inflation is impacting a wide range of aspects. This influence can be seen in the increase of daily expenses, as well as technological advancements and similar areas.

It appears that we’re witnessing an increase in the availability of intelligent devices nowadays. I can’t help but wish they were not so pricey. Compared to when they initially emerged in the mid-2000s, they are significantly more expensive. The incorporation of advanced technology into a system, particularly today, tends to boost the overall cost.

According to Polygon, Trinen pointed out that the enhancements contribute significantly to the cost of the anticipated pricing model for the Switch 2.

Trinen also commented on the exorbitant cost of some Nintendo Switch 2 games:

The price of video games has been very stable for a very long time.

I stumbled upon an old advertisement on my phone, dating back to 1993 when “Donkey Kong Country” was first launched on the SNES for $59. It’s remarkable how game pricing has remained relatively consistent over such a long period. Unfortunately, we find ourselves in a time where costs are generally on the rise, making it desirable to live in an era with more stable prices instead.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that Nintendo takes each Switch 2 title individually when determining its price. Factors such as game length and the immersiveness or ‘volume’ of the gaming experience are all taken into account. This is why you’ll find a range of prices for these games on the market.

Is there a reason to worry that the cost of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 might be too high? Share your thoughts below, or discuss it on the TopMob forum.
