In the world of Skyrim, it’s become a running gag among players that over time, every Dragonborn tends to evolve into a stealthy marksman. This is due to the effectiveness of this build from lower levels and its immense power at higher ones. Stealth archers dodge most harm, eliminate foes one by one, and don’t require any specific tools for their work. However, stealth archery in Oblivion isn’t as effective. In the original Oblivion, archery felt a bit unwieldy, while the remastered version has a glitch that caps damage on stealth archery attacks.
In my gaming adventures, I’ve found that the spellsword is the hidden stealth archer in the realm of Oblivion. Magic wields immense power here, and the game offers an array of unique weapons and enchantments that make the spellsword one of the most formidable builds. The learning curve isn’t too steep, making it accessible for gamers like me to unleash some serious destruction in Oblivion!
Oblivion’s Stealth Archer is the Spellsword
Oblivion’s Greatest Strength is its Magic System
As a gamer, I find myself drawn to the allure of theSpellsword character – a perfect blend of martial prowess and magical finesse. In the immersive world of Oblivion, casting spells is a breeze, making this role a delightful and fulfilling experience. Although combat can be mastered without magic in Oblivion, the tantalizing presence of it entices most gamers like me. Armed with legendary gear such as Chillrend, Spellbreaker, and the Akavari Sunderblade, my spellblade build emerges as one of the strongest and most captivating in the game.
As a gamer, I can’t help but appreciate the magic system in Oblivion. What sets it apart is its unique approach to spellcasting – it’s not tied to any specific equipment like most games. Instead, I can cast spells whether I’m wielding a shield and sword, a heavy weapon, or even a bow. This freedom to weave magic into my combat strategy is one of the reasons why Oblivion stands out in the gaming world.
Using magic as a martial character offers incredible convenience, especially in combat situations where spells can deal significant damage. Moreover, the variety of supportive spells in Oblivion greatly enhances the abilities of a warrior or thief. For instance, spells with the Light effect serve as a replacement for torches when navigating dark areas or dungeons. The Restoration school provides numerous support spells that boost different attributes and skills. Stealthy characters can use spells to become invisible, while the Alteration school offers spells that remove the need for lockpicking and allow the character to breathe underwater. Lastly, Clairvoyance is invaluable when navigating labyrinthine dungeons.
Why the Spellsword Didn’t Survive in Skyrim
Although the spellsword character in Oblivion gained quite a following when it debuted in 2006, it didn’t thrive in Skyrim, even though they belong to the same game series and share similar mechanics. One reason for this was that Skyrim offered fewer diverse spells compared to Oblivion. However, the primary factor leading to the decline of the spellsword in favor of the stealth archer in Skyrim wasn’t the limited selection of spells. Instead, it was a significant change in the key bindings system within Skyrim.
In the game Skyrim, spellswords are indeed an option, but there’s a catch: spells can only be effectively employed when one hand is free. If your character is wielding a bow, a two-handed weapon, a sword and shield, or dual-wielding, they must disarm to cast spells. This process involves navigating menus, casting the spell, and then rearming, which turns spellcasting into quite an inconvenience. Essentially, this setup makes it difficult for a spellsword character build to thrive.
In contrast to conventional archery, stealth archery excels in user-friendly builds offering both efficiency and power. Mastering stealth is one of the most straightforward skills to advance in Skyrim, boasting an optimized damage output through its skill tree. Archery remains potent as well, with a plentiful supply of arrows and enchanted bows capable of inflicting significant damage from a safe distance. Enemies are kept at bay due to the combined threat of melee abilities and Shouts that pack a lethal punch.
