The updated version of Oblivion has arrived, leaving me at a loss for fresh ways to introduce news articles with “The remaster of Oblivion is here” variations. Here’s an innovative twist: a Skyrim-themed music video featuring male Bosmer voice clips and the Adoring Fan model!
To put it another way, even ordinary folks like us are amazed by the effort Bethesda and Virtuos have put into this more polished, updated version of Cyrodiil set in 2025. Even Bruce Nesmith, the designer behind Oblivion (and also the director for Shivering Isles and lead designer for Skyrim), who left Bethesda during Starfield’s development, has had a chance to see the remaster, and he’s simply astounded by it.
During an interview with Videogamer, Nesmith acknowledged the incredible effort put forth by the game developers and described the level of remastering as “almost requiring a new term.” He further expressed that the word ‘remaster’ may not fully capture the extent of what has been done.
Nesmith was astonished by how extensively the remaster overhauled “every aspect of the game,” including revamping the animations and animation system, integrating Unreal Engine, modifying the leveling system, and updating the user interface. Initially, he had assumed that the update would be a straightforward enhancement, but upon seeing it, his expectations were significantly surpassed.
He had thought that the update would focus on texture changes, but what they’ve announced seems more like a full-scale makeover, not just a texture update. So now, he refers to the game as “Oblivion 2.0”.
There’s no fault to be found in that case. To me, the word ‘remaster’ typically brings up thoughts of improved resolution and smoother textures, not the extensive overhaul with Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) that Virtuos executed for Oblivion. But make no mistake, it is indeed a remaster; delve into the game files and you’ll discover that the majority of the original game’s files are there, encased in UE5 like a fly trapped in amber.
If you’re curious about Nesmith’s feelings, he expresses just one sentiment: “pride.” He shares that he feels proud because “A project I was involved with continues to attract interest 20 years later, and it seems worth the substantial effort and time Bethesda invested in remastering it.
“There’s precious few people in our industry who can say they’ve been part of something like that.”
