One Cyberpunk 2077 Side Quest Should Spark a Project Orion Plot Point

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt and countless hours spent navigating the gritty underbelly of cyberpunk worlds, I’m more than excited for CD Projekt Red’s Project Orion. With Cyberpunk 2077 serving as a solid foundation, it’s time to take the next step and delve deeper into the philosophical questions that this genre is famous for.

After the much-anticipated, lengthy release of Cyberpunk 2077, there’s a lot of excitement for its upcoming sequel, known as Project Orion. There are many paths that Project Orion could choose to follow, but it seems that fans are generally hoping for it to build upon the science fiction elements that made Cyberpunk 2077 so popular.

Spoilers ahead for
Cyberpunk 2077
‘s Dream On side quest.

The sub-genre of cyberpunk, originating from novels like “Neuromancer” and “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, delves into profound reflections on the essence of humanity in relation to technology. In simpler terms, stories within this genre tackle challenging techno-philosophical queries, inviting readers to ponder what existence might be like if technological advancement were unchecked, frequently exploring transformations in both physical and mental aspects. Games such as “Cyberpunk 2077” touch upon these topics, with elements like Johnny Silverhand’s Soulkiller engram being connected to transhumanist concepts. However, it could have delved deeper. To fully embrace the cyberpunk genre, a project like “Project Orion” should push further, and understanding one engaging side quest from “Cyberpunk 2077” would be a valuable lesson.

Project Orion Should Extrapolate Cyberpunk 2077’s Dream On Side Mission

Dream On Is One of Cyberpunk 2077’s Most Quietly Unnerving Stories

Toward the conclusion of the primary storyline, the Dream On mission finds players working for Jefferson Peralez, a mayoral aspirant and Night City Council member. This enterprising politician, along with his wife Elizabeth, enlists V’s assistance to investigate a burglary at his luxurious penthouse apartment. Jefferson asserts that he shot the intruder before losing consciousness, thereby casting doubt over the details of the break-in incident.

The situation grows more intricate as players seek guidance from SSI, a private security agency that was responsible for the Peralezes. The Peralezes’ representatives assert that no such incursion took place. Meanwhile, Elizabeth and Jefferson appear to be acting strangely, unable to recall crucial details, both from their recent past and distant history. As V and Johnny delve deeper into their investigation, they begin to uncover one of the most unsettling plot twists in Cyberpunk 2077.

As it turns out, Elizabeth’s and Jefferson’s minds are not wholly their own: a shadow organization is brainwashing them from afar using complex and obfuscated technology to alter their minds, ultimately puppeting the couple for their own aims. In the end, players have the choice to either tell Jefferson about the brainwashing, setting him down a path of immense paranoia, or keep the truth under wraps, allowing him to live out his days in blissful ignorance. There is no obvious way to stop the brainwashing, making this one of Cyberpunk 2077‘s most difficult player decisions.

Dream On Tells a Uniquely ‘Cyberpunk’ Story that Project Orion Could Learn From

In our rapidly evolving technological world, where cyberware and various physical enhancements are commonplace, it’s not hard to imagine that certain groups might discover ways to influence prominent figures in society. This is a chilling thought on multiple levels: the idea of losing control over my own thoughts is unsettling enough, but when you consider this happening to a politician, especially one who could potentially lead a major city, it raises serious doubts about the integrity and fairness of our democratic or just society. If CD Projekt Red wants to create genuine horror in Project Orion , they should explore these types of concepts deeply.

Combining the advanced technology of futuristic cyberpunk settings with the intense suspense of political mysteries such as “The Manchurian Candidate” could lead to an engaging experience. Taking this blend further than the Dream On side quest could be beneficial for Phantom Liberty. Amplifying the political intrigue and drama in Cyberpunk 2077, by adding themes like mind control and manipulation on a larger scale, could help create a chilling, thought-provoking, and almost apocalyptic gaming environment for Project Orion.
