One of PlayStation’s Live-Service Shut Downs Can’t Be The End

Recently, Sony has been canceling several of its live-service projects, including The Last of Us Online and a God of War spin-off by Bluepoint. This decision suggests that Sony might be revising its previous plans for live-service projects. It’s unfortunate to see these projects being terminated, but it could also signal a reemphasis on Sony’s strengths in single-player narratives. The company and its studios find themselves in a delicate position at the moment, as many people are curious about what the future might bring for them.

As a diehard fan, I found it disappointing when certain live-service projects were canceled, especially the spin-off of Sony’s iconic Twisted Metal series. While I can understand the fatigue that comes with live services, I firmly believe that Twisted Metal could have thrived in this format. Alas, if a live-service version of Twisted Metal never materializes, it’s crucial for the franchise to make a triumphant return.

Twisted Metal Deserves to Be Brought Back From the Ashes

Everything Known About the Canceled Live-Service Twisted Metal Game

  • The project was being developed by Firesprite.
  • The game was in its very early stages.

Based on Jason Schreier’s report from Bloomberg, the Twisted Metal spin-off was at such an early stage of development that it hadn’t yet been formally given the green light for full production. Essentially, the game was still in its conceptual phase, making it uncertain if it would have ever reached completion. Nevertheless, with another season of the live-action Twisted Metal series on Peacock, there’s a strong demand for a new Twisted Metal game.

Twisted Metal is Back in Pop Culture

  • Season 1 of Twisted Metal premiered on July 27, 2023.
  • Season 2 of Twisted Metal is set to premiere this summer.

Recently, Peacock unveiled a trailer for the second season of Twisted Metal, reintroducing this series to popular culture. This launch might revive enthusiasm for the entire Twisted Metal franchise. The initial season on Peacock received generally favorable reviews, even if it didn’t generate the same buzz as recent live-action video game adaptations such as HBO’s The Last of Us or Amazon Prime’s Fallout. However, its solid start was enough to secure a renewal. A second season is an encouraging sign for the franchise, suggesting that there remains interest in its distinctive vehicular combat concept.

The last entry in the series was 2012’s Twisted Metal.

Whether you’re an old fan who’s followed Twisted Metal since its early days on PlayStation or a newcomer just discovering this iconic series, now might be the ideal moment for a contemporary revamp of the franchise. Since the last installment in 2012, gaming has undergone an incredible transformation. The visuals, narratives, and gameplay mechanics have all advanced significantly, and it’s high time that Twisted Metal received a modern makeover with cutting-edge development. Given its status as a classic in the early PlayStation library, fans have long been eager to see what a brand-new entry would look like on powerful hardware like the PS5.

Despite a Live-Service Cancelation, There is Still Hope for Twisted Metal

It’s possible that Sony might reconsider their plans for a new “Twisted Metal” game in the future. While nothing is confirmed yet, a revival of this franchise could be on the horizon. The success of the live-action series suggests that there’s still a strong fanbase for “Twisted Metal”, and hopefully, this interest will translate back into video games as well.

After the failure of Concord last year, Sony has been doubling down on live-service cancelations.

I can’t help but feel disappointed that Firesprite’s take on Twisted Metal didn’t have its moment in the spotlight. Still, I remain hopeful for a reboot or perhaps a standalone title down the line. At present, we can only guess about the future of Twisted Metal, but the second season of Peacock’s series offers a glimmer of optimism.
