The world of One Piece is full of valuable treasures, but the most famous one is arguably the Straw Hat belonging to the main character, Monkey D. Luffy. He received it from the legendary Red-Haired Shanks at the start of the story, and it quickly became his most prized possession. What seemed like a simple gift has become much more significant as the series has progressed, as it’s been revealed that Luffy isn’t the first owner of this particular hat. The Straw Hat itself has a rich history, passed down through generations and holding many hidden secrets.
Joy Boy
- Hat Worn: Void Century Era
Fans learned early in the post-time skip that Joy Boy also owned a Straw Hat. During the Egghead arc, we saw Joy Boy wearing the famous hat, and he looked remarkably like Red-Haired Shanks. While he seemed larger overall, Joy Boy’s hat appeared a bit bigger than Luffy’s, it was still the same iconic hat.
This hat is believed to be frozen somewhere in the sacred land of Marijoa and holds a deep meaning within the story. By the time the One Piece manga concludes, author Eiichiro Oda will reveal all of its mysteries.
Gol D. Roger
- Hat Worn: Rocks And Roger Era
Before Luffy ever wore it, this famous Straw Hat belonged to Gol D. Roger, the legendary Pirate King. Roger treasured the hat above all else, considering it his most prized possession. He only gave it to people he completely trusted.
When Roger was younger, he often wore this particular hat, much like Luffy does now. He had it with him for a long time, even during the famous God Valley Incident. Later, when Shanks came of age, Roger passed the hat on to him, and then started wearing the Pirate King hat that most fans recognize. So, the Straw Hat Luffy wears today actually belonged to the Pirate King originally.

Shanks
- Hat Worn: Roger And Post-Roger Era
Shanks has owned the famous Straw Hat for a long time, and it means the world to him because the Pirate King himself gave it to him. Though they weren’t related by blood, Roger acted as a father figure to Shanks and raised him.
Shanks received this hat when he was young and kept it with him, even after Roger passed away. He wore it for many years, up until about 12 years ago when he gave it to Luffy. Shanks and Luffy made a promise that Shanks will one day reclaim the hat, and that’s what will happen.
Monkey D. Luffy
- Hat Worn: Great Pirate Era
Twelve years ago, Monkey D. Luffy received the Straw Hat from the powerful Red-Haired Shanks. Since then, the hat has become Luffy’s most prized possession, more valuable to him than anything else – even the legendary treasure known as the One Piece. This makes the Straw Hat incredibly meaningful to Luffy.
The Straw Hat is so central to Luffy’s identity that it’s become almost synonymous with his name. His determination to keep his promise to return the hat to Shanks is a major motivation for him, and with the story entering its final arc, a reunion with Shanks is on the horizon.
Nami
- Hat Worn: Arlong Park
Nami holds a special place in the Straw Hat crew – she was the first to ever wear the Straw Hat. Before the fight against the Arlong Pirates, Luffy showed his trust in her by personally placing the hat on her head and asking her to protect Cocoyashi Village.
Nami kept wearing the hat throughout the entire battle, finally giving it back to the captain. This scene is a classic moment in One Piece, demonstrating how much Luffy trusts her.
Tama
- Hat Worn: Wano Country
During the Wano Country arc, Luffy briefly gave his Straw Hat to Tama, asking her to keep it safe while he took care of Holdem. When Tama was tortured by Kaido’s subordinates, the Gifters, Luffy became incredibly angry and showed his strong hatred for the Beast Pirates.
Tama is a rare child who has worn Luffy’s iconic Straw Hat. She feels a strong bond with it and dreams of meeting the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates again someday.
Usopp
- Hat Worn: Long Ring Long Island
Usopp is the Straw Hat crew’s sniper, and it’s easy to forget he once wore Luffy’s signature Straw Hat! This happened during the Long Ring Long Island arc when Luffy had an afro and fought Foxy of the Foxy Pirates. Usopp wore the hat for a few chapters, demonstrating Luffy’s strong trust in him and how much he values it – enough to let Usopp borrow his most prized possession.
Luffy and Usopp have a remarkably close relationship that the author, Oda, has skillfully developed throughout the story, particularly during the Water 7 and Enies Lobby arcs. Over time, their connection has deepened, becoming one of the strongest and most unique friendships among the crew.
Nico Robin
- Hat Worn: En route to Little Garden
Nico Robin is the Straw Hat Pirates’ archaeologist, determined to find the Rio Poneglyph and uncover the world’s mysteries on the Final Island. Before joining Luffy, she was a member of Baroque Works, working alongside Sir Crocodile under the alias Miss All Sunday.
Nico Robin briefly wore Luffy’s Straw Hat shortly after attacking his ship on the way to Little Garden. In chapter 114, she gave the crew a map to Arabasta, and while there, she playfully used her Devil Fruit power to lift the hat off Luffy’s head and try it on herself. She quickly gave it back and left, but this small act showed she was already becoming interested in the Straw Hat crew. At the time, she didn’t realize that Luffy would eventually rescue her and she would become a vital member of the crew.
