For quite some time, Oda has been subtly acknowledging other works of fiction within the world of One Piece, skillfully incorporating witty references to both mainstream media and other manga. It’s not uncommon for creators of popular shonen series like Oda to pay homage to each other, as seen in his salute to Naruto during the Wano Country arc. However, what has piqued fans’ interest lately is a less anticipated reference.
In Chapter 153, there’s a hint that’s not overt but still clear – a nod to Harry Potter – which is one of the few times Oda has explicitly linked a Western book to his manga.
Oda’s History of Pop Culture References in One Piece
Over the course of its extended publication, the popular series One Piece is filled with numerous references, tributes, and nods to various works in fiction. From character designs influenced by real people, hidden winks to classic movies, to visual jokes referencing other cartoons and comics, Oda often includes surprises for observant viewers.
The nod to the series Naruto in Wano is just one of several instances that showcase Oda’s admiration for other creative endeavors. However, it’s not unusual to encounter anime and manga crossovers; what makes this Harry Potter reference stand out is that references from Western literature are relatively rare—making this Easter egg a fascinating discovery.
The Hidden Harry Potter Book in Chapter 153
Readers of “One Piece” who have recently revisited Chapter 153 have discovered an unanticipated detail in a backdrop panel depicting Dr. Kureha. In this scene, she is depicted sipping a drink while standing next to a bookshelf. Upon closer inspection, one can easily make out a book from the “Harry Potter” series among the assorted books on the shelf.
Next to them, there were two books: one labeled “The Shining,” reminiscent of Stephen King’s chilling novel, and several copies of “One Piece.” This added a touch of humor to the find. It’s possible that Oda incorporated “One Piece” as a witty tribute to the literary craze of the late 90s and early 2000s, namely Harry Potter. In other words, in the world of One Piece, Harry Potter is part of its lore.
