- Joy Boy stands out as the most powerful character in One Piece’s history, with a rebellious spirit that shook the World Government.
As a seasoned One Piece enthusiast, I must say that the characters in this illustrious manga are as diverse as they come. Each character has their unique strengths, abilities, and backstories that make them stand out. But when it comes to sheer power and influence, there are a few individuals who truly shine above the rest.
Although One Piece falls under the shonen genre, it doesn’t always stick to storylines suitable for young audiences. Quite often, major events in the series result in character deaths.
However, the death of a character does not undermine their strength. Throughout One Piece, fans have seen some of the strongest characters die. But who was the most powerful individual to have ever lived in One Piece?
It’s not yet confirmed that Kaido and Big Mom are deceased. Consequently, they do not appear on the list.
7 Portgas D. Ace
Cause Of Death: Punched Through The Chest By Akainu
Portgas D. Ace held the position of Second-in-Command within the Whitebeard Pirates. Following his defeat at the hands of Whitebeard, he chose to join their ranks. Over the ensuing years, he earned the admiration and esteem of his comrades. Whitebeard harbored ambitious aspirations for Ace, envisioning him as the future Pirate King. Regrettably, they met their untimely end during the events at Marineford.
Ace consumed the Mera Mera no Mi, a devil fruit that granted him the ability to generate and control fire on command. This power led him to vanquish a member of the Shichibukai and secure a place among the Supernovas of his time. Despite being capable of wielding all three forms of Haki, Ace was not yet adept enough to utilize them at their maximum potential.
6 Kozuki Oden
Cause Of Death: Shot By Kaido
Kozuki Oden was among the select individuals who voyaged alongside both the Roger Pirates and Whitebeard Pirates. It was during their shipwreck on Wano’s shores where Oden joined Whitebeard’s crew, remaining with them until he crossed paths with Roger. So profoundly affected by Roger’s speech, Oden chose to embark on a journey with him.
Oden, beyond his mission to interpret the mysterious Poneglyphs, was a formidable warrior who vanquished numerous foes in Wano. Upon his return, he engaged in a fierce battle with Kaido, coming close to defeating him. However, it was only Kaido’s lucky escape when Oden was momentarily diverted by Kurozumi Higurashi.
5 Ryuma
Cause Of Death: Natural
In the single-story manga by Oda named “MONSTERS”, Shimotsuki Ryuma serves as the central character. Interestingly, though, he’s been referenced multiple times within One Piece, and in the Thriller Bark storyline, we see him – but only as a zombie.
In a simplified form, Ryuma, a renowned warrior, used Shusui, an exceptional sword considered one of the best. For years, he battled pirates and foreign forces, safeguarding Wano from invasion and resource theft. His swordsmanship was so extraordinary that he was nicknamed the Sword God. Even Dracule Mihawk, a formidable figure himself, couldn’t match Ryuma’s skill level.
4 Whitebeard
Cause Of Death: Multiple Injuries, Sickness
38 years ago, a pirate named Edward Newgate, more famously known as Whitebeard, is believed to have been among the top ranks sailing with the Rocks Pirate group. Following their disbandment, he established his own pirate crew, the Whitebeard Pirates, due to his reputation as one of the world’s strongest men and a Yonko.
Whitebeard possessed the Gura Gura no Mi, a fruit granting him the power to generate seismic vibrations. This deadly Devil Fruit enabled him to wreck havoc on any island by summoning destructive tidal waves. Moreover, Whitebeard was proficient in three kinds of Haki and had achieved expert-level mastery over at least two of them.
3 Gol D. Roger
Cause Of Death: Executed By The Marines
Gol D. Roger was the pioneer who successfully navigated the entire Grand Line as a pirate. Throughout his journeys, he encountered formidable characters such as Rocks D. Xebec, Whitebeard, Shiki, among others. Despite these challenges, Roger emerged victorious and ultimately obtained the One Piece.
Roger did not have a Devil Fruit, but he possessed ridiculously strong Haki. His Divine Departure was potent enough to beat Kozuki Oden, an individual who was able to overwhelm Kaido. One of the most important things to keep in mind is that Roger competed with his rivals while he was sick, which would have at least affected his stamina. This makes his accomplishment all the more amazing.
2 Rocks D. Xebec
Cause Of Death: Unknown
As the fearsome captain of the Rocks Pirates, I, D. Xebec, harbored grand ambitions that extended beyond the typical pirate life. My ultimate goal was to bring down the World Government and seize control for myself. With my relentless pursuit and ruthless attitude, I’ve earned a reputation as a dangerous outlaw in the eyes of many, even among fellow pirates who see me as a looming threat.
1. It’s uncertain what specific powers or abilities Rock possessed, but it’s reasonable to infer that his repertoire included powerful attacks. As stated by Sengoku, Rock was a formidable adversary for Gol D. Roger, suggesting he was superior to Whitebeard in some way. Notably, Roger needed to join forces with Garp to defeat the Rocks Pirates.
1 Joy Boy
Cause Of Death: Likely Killed By The World Government
Based on the information from the manga, it appears that Joy Boy is undoubtedly one of the most powerful characters ever to appear in One Piece. As per Vegapunk’s accounts, Joy Boy was a pioneering pirate who defied the World Government openly.
Joy Boy has been confirmed to have the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit that made his body stretchy. Additionally, his Haki was incredibly powerful. This was evident from the incident when Emet released Joy Boy’s sealed Haki, which knocked out almost all the Marines on Egghead Island and sent four of the Five Elders back to Marijoa. It is hard to imagine anyone else in One Piece achieving a similar feat. However, by the end of the series, Luffy will most likely be in the same bracket as Joy Boy.
