OpenAI has launched a new tool powered by Codex, its AI assistant that helps developers with coding tasks like writing, debugging, and submitting changes. Since its release in May 2025, Codex has grown to around 1.6 million weekly users. This new tool, called Codex Security, expands those capabilities to include application security, a market worth approximately $20 billion each year.
OpenAI’s announcement comes as it released GPT-5.3 Instant and GPT-5.4 as well. The move also follows Anthropic’s Feb. 20 debut of Claude Code Security, which scans entire codebases and suggests patches for detected vulnerabilities. Built on the Claude Opus 4.6 model, the tool attempts to reason about software like a human security researcher—analyzing business logic, data flows, and system interactions rather than relying solely on static scanning rules.
Anthropic’s Claude Code Security has discovered over 500 weaknesses in open-source software, even finding some that had existed for years without detection. Currently, the tool is available as a preview for businesses and teams, and open-source project maintainers can request free, faster access.
Both companies believe that AI, which can understand the meaning behind code, will be better at finding security flaws than current tools. Traditional scanners often flag many issues that aren’t real problems. To fix this, Claude Code Security uses a system that double-checks its findings and rates how serious and reliable they are.

When Claude Code Security launched in February, some cybersecurity companies—like Crowdstrike and Palo Alto Networks—saw their stock prices dip by 5% to 10% initially, though they mostly bounced back quickly.
At the time, analysts said the selloff likely reflected anxiety about whether AI tools could replace parts of the application security market. Many researchers, however, argue that AI tools are more likely to complement existing security platforms rather than replace them outright.
