David Tennant as the tormented priest in “Apostle” was nothing short of mesmerizing, his haunting portrayal echoing the turmoil of his own life journey – much like the Doctor himself, he navigated the darkest corners of human nature with an intensity that was both captivating and chilling.

Historically, the genre hasn’t always received its fair share of recognition; however, with the involvement of prominent actors and captivating performances, it seems the horror world is experiencing a renaissance.

Remarkably, some actors truly excelled by fully embracing exceptional material. Interestingly, this list features many fresh faces in the genre, performers who are not traditionally associated with horror yet have delivered impressive performances.

Lupita Nyong’o In A Quiet Place Day One

Lupita Nyong’o, surprisingly, has been hailed as a “scream queen” following her roles in both “A Quiet Place Day One” and “Us”. However, she earns praise in these two productions for distinct reasons. In “A Quiet Place Day One”, her portrayal is noteworthy because she plays a multidimensional character who isn’t immediately endearing. A cancer patient with an affinity for her cat over people, finds herself fleeing and concealing from the same extraterrestrial beings that pursued Emily Blunt and her on-screen family across two movies.

Lara’s acting performance stands out as our favorite because it feels incredibly authentic. Unlike Ellen Ripley transforming into an alien slayer out of nowhere, Lara’s character is battling for survival – we can see that clearly. Yet, she manages to make the audience empathize with her even when a truly joyful resolution seems impossible.

David Dastmalchian In Late Night With The Devil

Dastmalchian may not be an expert in horror, but it’s not his main area of expertise either. This might have contributed to his convincing portrayal of a talk-show host in Late Night with the Devil, who just happened to have the misfortune of interviewing the wrong guest.

Additionally, he performs exceptionally in his role, striving to revive the pinnacle of his career amidst personal turmoil following his wife’s demise. He then welcomes a woman believed to be possessed onto his program. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say chaos ensues. During this tumultuous period, he convincingly plays the part of the unsuspecting victim, adding just the right touch of unsavory charm.

James McAvoy In Speak No Evil

In a recent adaptation of a chilling Danish horror film titled “Speak No Evil“, there are certain issues, particularly during its climax. However, James McAvoy delivers an outstanding performance as the menacing character who encounters an American family – consisting of a couple and their child – while vacationing in Tuscany.

Despite the American couple, portrayed by Mackenzie Davis and Scott McNeary, being rather unlikable and grating, Daniel McAvoy manages to captivate with his charm even in scenes where he’s clearly insane. He skillfully makes the audience question at various points whether it’s him or those accusing him who is actually strange. Given his past role as a mentally disturbed individual in “Split”, McAvoy delivers a unique and convincing portrayal of a different kind of insanity here.

Dan Stevens In Abigail

As a movie enthusiast, it’s tough for me to link the character of the once-corrupt police detective who became a vampire, played by Dan Stevens, with the actor who met an untimely end in a car crash, returning blissfully from Downton Abbey after the birth of his son. Yet, this tragic real-life event seems to have added depth to his on-screen portrayal, making it all the more compelling and memorable.

As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that the British actor’s portrayal of a New York cop in “Abigail” left me utterly convinced. It was as if I had seen him on the streets of NYC before, but for the life of me, I couldn’t place where. What truly impressed me was his ability to embody a character who exuded authority, even hinting at a (dysfunctional) fatherly presence. However, the real magic lay in his transformation into an individual who spiraled rapidly and dangerously out of control.

Hugh Grant In Heretic

In an unexpected twist, a seasoned actor like Hugh Grant, known primarily for his work in non-horror genres, made his debut in horror films in 2024. What made this even more surprising was the exceptional quality of his performance in this new role. Remarkably, Grant delivered one of the best horror performances that year, as his portrayal of a religious serial killer sent shivers down the spine of viewers.

In a scene where he’s conversing with two young women who come to his house, the spectators sense an unease, yet he appears captivating and engaging. When he discloses his motive for their presence, he seems sincere, maybe just tragically misinformed. Then, the movie Heretic truly kicks off. The chilling silence that pervades the film makes his performance one of, if not the most outstanding horror movie portrayals of 2024.
