Summary
- A new list from Nintendo shows six apps and over 40 games with Switch 2 compatibility issues.
- Some of these issues may be fixed before the console’s launch, while others may require additional updates.
- Titles with current support issues include Doom Eternal, Pizza Tower, and Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist.
Nintendo has added Switch 2 incompatibility issues to its expanding list of games and apps. It’s not unusual for a new console generation to encounter some loss of backward compatibility, but the inconsistency in which games and apps work with Nintendo’s upcoming system has caused some confusion among fans. As the release date for the Nintendo Switch 2 approaches, more clarity is emerging about its compatibility features, although there are still some key questions left unanswered.
Initially when Nintendo unveiled its next-gen console, they mentioned that the Switch 2 would only partially support older games, without elaborating on the details. They simply stated that certain Switch 1 games might not transfer to the Switch 2. Later, it was disclosed that a handful of games will function on both systems, while others will necessitate upgrades for the Switch 2. Now, Nintendo has been releasing an expanding catalog of apps that are currently incompatible but will become playable in the future.
According to Nintendo Life, on May 27th, Nintendo updated their website listing around 40 games currently without support for the Switch 2. However, these games will gain compatibility through updates at either launch or later. Previously, Nintendo clarified that the Switch 2’s backward compatibility isn’t solely dependent on hardware, meaning that lack of immediate compatibility doesn’t necessarily mean it will be incompatible forever. This is positive news for the console’s collection of older titles, but it also signifies that some games and apps will require time and effort to function properly on the system.
Nintendo Lists Six Apps and Over 40 Games With Switch 2 Compatibility Issues
As an enthusiast, I’m eagerly waiting for updates on some of my favorite games like “Doom Eternal,” “Pizza Tower,” and “Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist” to ensure they’re compatible with the upcoming Switch 2 console. It’s a bit uncertain when these games will receive the necessary updates, but there’s hope that “Doom Eternal,” which is highly praised as one of the best FPS games on Switch, won’t miss the boat and be available at launch. Other titles like “Dead by Daylight” and “Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition” are currently experiencing startup issues that Nintendo is addressing. These might not require a full compatibility update, but they may need a patch to run smoothly on the new system.
In addition to these games, Nintendo listed six apps with Switch 2 compatibility issues, including:
- Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit
- ABEMA
- Crunchyroll
- Hulu
- InkyPen
- Niconico
The Nintendo Labo app is unlikely to receive an update for the Switch 2 due to its size being too large to fit into the accompanying VR goggles. However, it’s possible that other apps may be updated in the future, although specific timing remains uncertain. Keep in mind that various games will need updates to run on the Switch 2, some of which might be free and others paid. So, stay tuned for further updates to know what’s coming up.
