As a long-time Overwatch fan with a soft spot for fighting games like Guilty Gear, I must say that the recent fan art of Overwatch 2 as a fighting game has truly captured my heart. The attention to detail and the seamless blend of two distinct genres is nothing short of incredible. It’s like a dream come true, imagining Tracer and Kiriko duking it out on King’s Row, all while sporting UI elements straight from Overwatch 2.

An Overwatch 2 fan recently shared some art that transformed Blizzard’s first-person shooter into a fighting game. This incredible fan art captures the style of games like Guilty Gear and brings it to Overwatch 2 in a way that makes one wonder what it and its prequel would have been like as a totally different genre.

Ever since its debut in 2016, Overwatch has been a trailblazer for hero-focused first-person shooter games. In fact, both it and the 2022 follow-up have sparked numerous imitators within the genre, such as Paladins, Valorant, and the eagerly awaited rival to Overwatch 2, Marvel Rivals.

Currently, an enthusiast has creatively reinvented the first-person shooter (FPS) game, Overwatch 2, as if it belonged to a distinct genre. Artist and player, JB, turned Overwatch 2 into a fighting game in an impressive collection of illustrations depicting Tracer and Kiriko engaged in combat on King’s Row. The artwork style mirrors 2D fighting games such as Guilty Gear Strive, serving as inspiration for JB’s work, and incorporates UI elements directly from Overwatch 2. Additionally, JB experimented with various other maps, including the MEKA base in Busan and Junkertown, all of which were shared on Twitter.

What If Overwatch 2 Was a Fighting Game?

It’s clear that fans of Overwatch 2 were thrilled with JB’s work. They flooded his post with comments and likes, expressing their desire for the game to be released and discussing theories about each hero’s role in it. Some even suggested improving the game by incorporating characters from Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo, similar to the fictional Fighters of the Storm arcade game found on various Overwatch 2 maps. Overall, gamers were amazed by JB’s art, with many believing it was created by a team of professional UI designers instead of just one person.

Back in 2014, Blizzard played a similar prank on April Fool’s Day. They announced a fictitious fighting game titled Blizzard Outcasts: Vengeance of the Vanquished. This game was filled with deceased characters from Diablo, Warcraft, and Starcraft, such as Arcturus Mengsk, Kael’thas Sunstrider, Deckard Cain, Mankrik’s Wife, and even a Treasure Goblin. Though this joke preceded the creation of Overwatch, it’s plausible that fallen characters from its universe would have also appeared within the game.

It’s worth noting that while it may not be a certainty, the idea of an Overwatch 2 fighting game isn’t entirely implausible. A recent leak hints that Blizzard is assembling a new team with the purpose of creating AA games using their established intellectual properties. Although fans might not anticipate a fighting game, they may expect to see smaller games related to the Overwatch universe in the near future.
