As a huge Overwatch 2 fan, I remember when they announced a second Mythic skin for Season 19 – everyone was both excited and a little worried about what it would be like. Now that the Junkrat Mythic skin is actually here, those feelings are still around, but it’s a different thing causing the buzz!
Players initially reacted with mixed feelings to Overwatch 2 changing how Mythic skins are earned. Those who always complete the battle pass are upset they can’t get both new Mythic skins this season – they have to choose between Lifeweaver and Junkrat. While some players appreciate being able to pick the Mythic skin they prefer, completionists are disappointed. Interestingly, even Junkrat fans are divided, as they’ve realized the bonus Season 19 Mythic skin offers a competitive disadvantage.
Why is Overwatch 2’s Junkrat Mythic Problematic?
The new skin has been very popular with the Overwatch 2 community, especially Junkrat’s unique hairstyle and the bright, neon face players unlock at tier 4. Small details, like the colorful explosion effects from his Rip-Tire, are also well-received. However, there’s one problem: the skin changes the look of his Steel Trap. Instead of a normal pressure plate, enemies step on a large, glowing tongue. While this fits the skin’s punk theme, it’s so obvious that it makes the trap much easier to see and avoid, as many players have pointed out on Reddit (like in this post from black_chowder).
I just saw another post on Reddit – apparently this issue is even worse on darker maps like Shambali Monastery. The tongue traps are so obvious, you can’t help but shoot them! And forget about trying to hide them on maps like Dorado, Lijiang Tower, or any of the night-time versions. They’re just too visible to be effective.
Junkrat’s traps are a key part of how he’s played in Overwatch 2. When he’s not throwing grenades, he’s usually catching enemies who try to sneak around behind his team. In the heat of battle, it’s easy to forget to watch out for these traps, and they’re designed to blend in with the environment or hide behind objects. However, a new Mythic skin for Junkrat makes his traps much more visible, effectively removing his ability to use sneaky trap placements.
Luckily, Overwatch 2 players have offered a possible fix to Blizzard that might be added to the game soon. Instead of changing the unique design of the Mythic trap, the game could show the enemy team a standard Junkrat trap while Junkrat’s teammates see the special Mythic version. Other ideas include making the trap’s tongue smaller or using less bright colors. For now, some Junkrat players, like CapableCondition5193, suggest using the Los Muertos skin if they have it, as the colors and style match the Mythic trap, making it less noticeable.
Blizzard hasn’t officially responded to the issues players are having with Junkrat’s new Mythic skin, but given the amount of feedback, they’ll probably make some changes. Luckily, most players seem to like how the skin looks overall, so hopefully this gets fixed quickly and everyone can enjoy it.
