Overwatch Players Aren’t Happy With New Season 2 Hero

Sierra, the latest hero added to Overwatch 2 in the Reign of Talon Season 2, has just been released, and many players already think her ultimate ability, Trailblazer, is too strong and needs to be adjusted. Despite only being available for about a day, players are expressing frustration with how powerful Sierra currently is.

On April 14th, a new update called Reign of Talon Season 2: Summit arrived for Overwatch. This update included many additions, with Sierra, a new damage-dealing hero focused on reconnaissance, being a major highlight. Sierra uses a drone named Dorothy to quickly move around the battlefield. This allows her to position herself for accurate shots with her Helix Rifle, which can lock onto targets, and to deploy Tremor Charges that damage multiple enemies at once.

Sierra’s Ultimate in Overwatch Reign of Talon Season 2 is ‘Busted’

Sierra’s signature ability, Trailblazer, is getting a lot of attention from the Overwatch community. Players like Void_entity94 shared their concerns on Reddit, saying the developers were serious when they designed Trailblazer. The post quickly gained over 2,700 upvotes and 300 comments within a day, with many users agreeing that the ability seems overpowered.

Sierra’s ultimate ability, Trailblazer, launches Dorothy forward to drop 23 bombs. The farther Dorothy travels, the wider the area the bombs cover. Each bomb does between 72 and 180 damage, with damage decreasing the further away you are from the center. Because Dorothy moves so quickly, it’s hard to dodge the attack, particularly in tight spaces. Trailblazer can quickly eliminate vulnerable heroes, and even tanks can take significant damage from the barrage. Importantly, Sierra doesn’t need much ultimate charge to use Trailblazer, meaning she can activate it frequently, especially if she’s accurately hitting enemies with her Tracking Shot.

It’s common for new characters in competitive games like Overwatch to initially be too strong. Vendetta, for example, has been a dominant force since she was added in Season 20, even after several attempts to balance her. Despite this, her ultimate ability, Trailblazer, often outperforms similar abilities, like Hanzo’s Dragonstrike. While Dragonstrike deals more damage in a straight line, Trailblazer’s speed and overall damage output make it more effective in many scenarios.

In the past, Blizzard tested new Overwatch heroes extensively before release to ensure they were balanced. However, with the quicker release schedule for the Reign of Talon update, there isn’t time for that kind of testing anymore. This likely means some new heroes will be either too strong or too weak when they first launch. Fortunately, the Overwatch team is usually quick to make small adjustments to hero stats, especially if a hero is proving to be overwhelmingly powerful. Players can probably expect Sierra to receive some initial nerfs in the next couple of weeks, with bigger balance changes coming in the May mid-season update.
