The game development company Ironwood Studios has unveiled a significant new update for their popular roguelike survival title, “Pacific Drive.” Released back in February 2024 on both PC and PS5 platforms, this game captivated players with its immersive ambiance and distinctive driving mechanics.

In stark contrast to the growing number of survival games, “Pacific Drive” distinguished itself as one of the top survival games of the 2020s due to its unique emphasis and real-time gameplay mechanics. Players find themselves in solitude, navigating an anomaly-ridden exclusion zone located in the American Pacific Northwest, primarily relying on driving, enhancing, and safeguarding their battered station wagon for survival within this zone. This vehicle-centric gameplay experience sets “Pacific Drive” apart from the plethora of foot-based survival games that commonly define the genre, earning it a dedicated fanbase, over a million sales in its debut year, and nominations at The Game Awards, along with plans for a TV series adaptation.

Starting April 3, Ironwood Studios has unveiled the complimentary “Pacific Drive: Endless Expeditions” expansion for Spring 2025. This update, launched a year after the game’s debut, is touted as the largest Pacific Drive overhaul to date, introducing an innovative approach to engage with the game’s roguelike framework. Dubbed “Expeditions,” this new mode initiates players in their garage with a distinct, randomly generated set of tasks and limitations while creating fresh routes and ratcheting up the challenge level. The Expeditions are designed to infuse Pacific Drive with excitement beyond its original story-driven main campaign, further solidifying its reputation as one of the top science fiction survival games available.

In the previous Pacific Drive previews, it was hinted that players would gain access to Expeditions at a specific early stage in the main storyline. Once this point is reached, they will have the freedom to initiate Expeditions whenever desired and send materials back to Oppy’s workshop for upgrades. Additionally, a new trader named Ida’s Exchange has been introduced, where players can barter resources for scarce parts, unique recipes, and exclusive garage customizations.

Alongside the Expeditions update, Ironwood Studios has incorporated a highly anticipated fan feature: the option to temporarily pause a game in progress. For quite some time, fans have been advocating for the ability to save a game during a run, with Ironwood initially resisting due to concerns that it conflicted with the fundamental gameplay mechanics. However, after much demand, the Pacific Drive default save system now allows players to save their game when entering new Junctions or reaching a safe garage as an alternative. The Endless Expeditions update, on the other hand, enables players to save their progress at any point within a Junction and continue from there. Moreover, this update also includes the option to deactivate autosaving and start a fresh game by bypassing the tutorial.

The latest upgrade underscores Ironwood’s substantial commitment to Pacific Drive, going well beyond the original launch phase. Hopefully, it will sustain fan interest for a longer period.

  • Known Issues
    • When reloading from a suspended run, the car might experience an incredible amount of upward movement depending on how closely to the car the game was suspended
    • This situation is dependent upon frame perfect scenarios and is affected by car and player collision
    • Some Campaign Mission details might appear on Expeditions
    • Details may appear in route planner information if junction is repurposed from a Campaign Mission
    • The Paint Shelf objective is registering paints and decal kits in locked Goldshells

    • Status effect indicators on bumpers are not rotating properly in inventory when storing part
    • Player can stand on rear left door when exiting car if rear left door is open, will also cause door to break and fall off
