On the morning of Thursday, September 4th, I found myself in a predicament – Steam was down for me and many others, with the store’s purchasing capabilities being particularly affected. The downtime coincided with the official release of Hollow Knight: Silksong, leading me to suspect that this highly-anticipated Metroidvania from Team Cherry might be the cause of the issue.

Hollow Knight: Silksong has been generating excitement for six long years and is undoubtedly one of the most eagerly awaited games in history. Given its immense popularity, it’s no wonder that its release seemed to have triggered a massive influx of gamers flocking to Steam, potentially causing the platform to crash under the strain. As per Down Detector, thousands of users have already reported issues with Steam.

Over numerous decades, the enthusiasm from fans was so immense that Toriyama ultimately produced another sequel titled “Dragon Ball Super”, available both as a manga and an anime. It’s worth noting that Dragon Ball isn’t the sole manga to spawn a follow-up series. Some could even claim that these successors executed the concept more effectively for one significant reason: they passed the torch, allowing fresh perspectives and ideas to emerge.

For nearly a decade, Hollow Knight: Silksong has been meticulously crafted by developers, filled with captivating content designed for player enjoyment, thanks to their unwavering dedication. Fans of the series have eagerly anticipated this long-awaited sequel, with its release feeling like a dream. Now, that wait is finally over as players can experience Silksong on all supported platforms.

2025 had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Hollow Knight: Silksong, as the highly-anticipated indie game delayed the release of over a dozen other games. The success and hype surrounding Silksong has been so significant that even some larger developers like Devolver Digital postponed their own title, Baby Steps. Originally set for release on PlayStation 5 and Steam on September 8, the launch of Baby Steps has now been moved to September 23, in order to avoid clashing with Silksong.

Hollow Knight soared to unprecedented heights, ultimately becoming one of the most highly acclaimed Metroidvania games ever made. Its compelling sense of discovery, demanding level design, and tactical combat combine to create an experience that impresses many players.

For close to a decade, Hollow Knight has maintained its legendary standing. Yet, the mantle seems to have been effectively handed over to Hollow Knight: Silksong. In mere moments after the sequel’s release, Hollow Knight: Silksong single-handedly managed to crash Steam, Xbox, and the Nintendo eShop platforms.

Silksong was exceptionally popular, outperforming the original Hollow Knight’s highest concurrent player count within a mere 15 minutes. This is remarkable given that many players were unable to download the game due to high demand causing Steam, Xbox, and Nintendo’s digital storefronts to temporarily shut down!

I navigated through Twitch, selecting different channels where users were expressing dissatisfaction due to Steam’s collapse, which they themselves contributed to.

According to Matt Brown of Extra Points, EA has chosen not to develop a college basketball game anymore, as schools have opted to work with 2K’s alternative proposal instead.

After captivating us during our hands-on preview at Gamescom, it’s clear that Silksong is the follow-up to the initial Hollow Knight game. Fans have eagerly anticipated its launch for almost a decade now.
