Sony’s Columbia Pictures is taking Starship Troopers back to the drawing board. The 1997 original has become a cult classic in the years since its release and it did launch an admittedly lackluster multimedia franchise. An animated series, multiple direct-to-video sequels, and a host of video games have kept Starship Troopers in the background of public consciousness for years, but none of these projects have lived up to the hyper-violent and hyper-satirical film helmed by Paul Verhoeven. Weirdly enough, the Helldivers franchise of video games has done a better job of successfully mimicking Starship Troopers than it’s own products have. This time around, Sony and Columbia are changing things up instead of dipping into the same old well yet again.

Even though the start of 2025 has brought some strong competition from the likes of Monster Hunter Wilds and Avowed, Valve’s hyper-competitive shooter has remained firmly in the top spot on Steam. On February 16, Counter-Strike 2 surpassed 1.7 million concurrent players, setting a new peak player count for the game. Now, just under a month later, it’s done it again.

Originally launched in 2003, Valve’s digital storefront was originally packaged as a way to easily update its games. At the time, the Steam client was supported primarily on Windows XP and older operating systems, including Windows 98. In the ensuing years, support for older Windows PCs running Windows 98 and XP ended. Since then, Steam has evolved into the leading launcher and storefront for PC gamers worldwide. Following the success of Valve’s Steam Deck, the SteamOS used by the popular tablet will make its way to other devices like the Lenovo Legion Go S starting in May 2025.

On Crunchyroll, Demon Slayer has firmly held the second position with over 500,000 ratings. However, it has finally been usurped by Solo Leveling. Much like Demon Slayer, Solo Leveling has been propelled to the heights of fame in just a few years. The first season of the anime laid a strong foundation, and the subsequent installment built on it.

Speaking of demons, this particular fantasy race has become a staple even outside of its own “fantasy” genre. Even more so than Veilguard, Mass Effect 4 is a game at a crossroads. Though Mass Effect 3’s infamous ending remains hotly debated and maligned to this day, it is certainly final and definitive: it doesn’t leave much room for a continuation of the story. While it would appear that Mass Effect 4 will be returning to the Milky Way, and will almost certainly feature at least one character from the original trilogy, it may be in the series’ best interest to distance itself from the Shepard saga as much as possible, forging a new path.

The unveiling of the new game will happen at the Star Wars Celebration event taking place on April 19. This gathering will feature multiple Star Wars-related activities and updates.

Like many fellow tabletop players, I dislike wordy rule books, and if I have to read through ten or more pages of rules, and I mean just rules alone, my brain will certainly want to pack up, turn the lights off, and shut the door.
