Peter Schiff, ever the optimist when it comes to gold, has once again waved his metaphorical sceptre, questioning Bitcoin‘s “worth” as a long-term investment. How dreadfully amusing, really.
Well, if you must know:
- Peter Schiff points out that Bitcoin has gained a measly 12% over the last five years, trailing behind gold, silver, the Nasdaq, and even the S&P 500. Oops, there goes the Bitcoin hype!
- Michael Saylor, the eternal Bitcoin evangelist, insists Bitcoin has outshone other assets since August 2020. Apparently, all that matters is “when you start counting.” How quaint.
- Santiment data reveals that Bitcoin’s reputation has dipped as bearish sentiment soared to levels last seen in late February, with the bear-to-bull ratio plummeting to 0.81. Who says Bitcoin’s a guaranteed treasure?
In a post on X (formerly Twitter, but who cares about names anymore?), Peter compared Bitcoin’s five-year performance with that of Nasdaq, S&P 500, gold, and silver. His little comparison was aimed at the pressing question of whether Bitcoin can still boast of an edge over those traditional, reliable assets. In other words, is Bitcoin the next big thing, or just a passing fad?
In his oh-so-charming critique, Peter pointed out that Bitcoin only managed a paltry 12% rise in the last five years. Meanwhile, Nasdaq roared ahead by 57.4%, S&P 500 strutted up with a 59.4% increase, gold made a dazzling 163% leap, and silver, good old silver, galloped up with a whopping 181% surge. Why, Bitcoin, why?
Peter’s conclusion? Well, naturally, if Bitcoin is supposed to be the ‘superior’ long-term investment, why, pray tell, should anyone bother holding on to it? A rather excellent question, don’t you think?
“If the appeal of Bitcoin is its superior long-term performance, why should anyone keep HODLing it?” Ah, the mystery deepens.
Saylor’s Answer: It’s All About the Timeline, Darling
Michael Saylor, in his usual sprightly fashion, responded by pointing out that the comparison depends on where you start your stopwatch. “Timeframes matter,” he quipped, attempting to shift the conversation from a fixed five-year period to a much broader timeline. Naturally, this gives Bitcoin the chance to look better on a longer chart, because, well, anything with a longer timeline looks more impressive, right?
Saylor, in a move that could only be described as gloriously optimistic, continued to insist that Bitcoin has been the best-performing asset since August 2020. According to him, the longer you look, the more Bitcoin’s superiority shines through. Of course, that would mean ignoring all the pesky short-term data. But who’s counting?
And Here Comes Kiyosaki with a Historical Perspective
Robert Kiyosaki, ever the financial sage, brought a little extra spice to the debate by linking current financial stress to events from 1974. Oh yes, let’s throw the 1970s into the mix! Kiyosaki declared that “the future created in 1974 has arrived,” and used this as an excuse to connect today’s debt and inflation woes with the petrodollar system. A bold statement, wouldn’t you say?
According to Kiyosaki, baby boomers are now facing immense pressure, what with their pensions being replaced by good old market-based retirement plans. This, of course, served to distract from the topic of Bitcoin’s price performance, nudging the conversation into the much broader territory of retirement planning and household finances. How thoughtful of him.
Meanwhile, Santiment’s market sentiment data showed that Bitcoin enthusiasts weren’t exactly full of pep. Bearish chatter around Bitcoin reached its peak since late February, with the bull-to-bear ratio dropping to a rather uninspiring 0.81. Certainly not the kind of ratio one wants to flaunt at a dinner party.
But of course, let’s not forget that extreme fear can sometimes act as a contrarian signal. Markets, after all, love to do the opposite of what people expect. Perhaps the market will rally, just to prove everyone wrong. Or maybe not.
