Pillars of Eternity Fans Rejoice: Turn-Based Mode Coming in 2025

Summary

  • Obsidian Entertainment has announced a turn-based combat mode for the original Pillars of Eternity, set to arrive in 2025.
  • Patch 1.3.8.0.87535 was also released for the game, fixing various bugs.
  • It’s possible that Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire may receive updates as well, following the success of Avowed.

The game developer Obsidian Entertainment has shared that they’ll introduce a turn-based mode to the initial release of ‘Pillars of Eternity’ in 2025. This unexpected announcement is exciting news for fans of this long-standing series.

Initially launched in 2015, Pillars of Eternity was a contemporary reinterpretation of games like Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2. It quickly gained positive acclaim, with many critics appreciating its compelling narrative, immersive world-building, and atmospheric setting. On OpenCritic, it earned an average score of 85. Following its release, the game received a two-part expansion and a sequel titled Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire in 2018. Unfortunately, despite being well-received critically, low sales of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire prevented further direct sequels from being produced.

10 years have passed since I first delved into the enchanting world of “Pillars of Eternity”, and now, Obsidian Entertainment has unveiled an exciting new development: Turn-Based Combat! Slated for release in 2025, this mode harks back to the classic RPG roots that we all know and love.

While the original “Pillars of Eternity” featured Real Time with Pause combat, its sequel, “Deadfire”, introduced a turn-based mode post-launch. Given this history, it’s safe to assume that the upcoming system will bear a striking resemblance to the one seen in “Deadfire”.

To top it off, Obsidian also shared that Patch 1.3.8.0.87535 has been released for the game. This update mainly focuses on squashing a few pesky bugs, ensuring an even smoother adventure for us fans!

Pillars of Eternity Will Get Turn-Based Mode After 10 Years

In addition, a new Turn-Based Combat mode is in development for Pillars of Eternity coming later this year. More details on how to participate will be shared once it’s available, so keep an eye on our socials and the Obsidian Discord server! discord.gg/obsidian — Obsidian (@obsidian.net) 2025-03-26T17:45:08.029Z

It’s not the first time Obsidian Entertainment’s classic RPG has gotten an update after a long period. Last year, for instance, Pillars of Eternity unexpectedly received a fix for visual, audio, and navigation issues. Many believed that this unexpected patch was in preparation for Avowed, but few expected another update to the classic role-playing game.

Given the recent triumph of the game “Avowed,” which shares the same universe as the “Pillars of Eternity” series, there’s a chance that updates might come for “Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire” as well, but at this point, it’s uncertain. Last month, Obsidian announced that they were pleased with the sales of “Avowed,” however, no decision has been made regarding whether it will have a sequel or additional paid content. For now, the team is working on “The Outer Worlds 2,” and while they’ve hinted at future updates for “Avowed,” specific details about when these might be revealed are not yet available.
