The Pokémon anime is famous for its incredible variety of creatures, and with each new series, even more amazing Pokémon are introduced. These designs are often beautiful, their powers impressive, and their personalities endearing. However, one type of Pokémon consistently stands out as a fan favorite: the Dragon-type.
I’ve been watching Ash Ketchum’s journey for over 25 years, and he’s had quite a few Dragon-type Pokémon on his team – each one with its own special strengths. Some were incredibly powerful and helped him win tough battles, while others quickly became fan favorites because of their personalities. Though all of his Dragon-types played a role in his quest to become a top trainer, they didn’t all have the same level of impact on the story or the battles themselves.
6. Naganadel
Like many of the strongest Legendary Pokémon, the introduction of Ultra Beasts was a huge deal for fans of both the video games and the anime, thanks to their impressive power and unique appearances. Ash Ketchum proved this, successfully raising and training one – the Dragon-type Naganadel. This powerful Pokémon, often in its earlier form, Poiple, was a valuable ally to Ash throughout the Sun and Moon anime series. After a particularly emotional farewell, Naganadel returned to its own world.
Naganadel reappeared just before Ash’s final battle with Professor Kukui, having evolved while it was off-screen. Its incredible speed and strong Dragon and Poison-type moves were crucial to Ash winning, but it didn’t become very popular with fans because it wasn’t featured much. Despite being powerful, Naganadel didn’t have a lasting impact on the story, partly due to animation changes in the Sun and Moon anime, and mostly because viewers didn’t have enough time to really connect with it.
5. Noivern
Fans often recall Ash’s most memorable Pokémon partners as being strong and lively, like Pikachu and Charizard, who were known for their courage and personality. However, Ash sometimes befriended quieter, more timid Pokémon who became important members of his team. Noivern is a good example – it started as a very young and shy Noibat. Because it was so small and inexperienced, it tended to avoid trouble, being fearful of new things and getting hurt.
Noibat had to train incredibly hard and for a long time to evolve into the powerful Noivern. As Noivern, it battled formidable opponents like Metang and Salamence, and even faced off against the legendary Zapdos. However, Noivern’s lack of experience and tendency to be afraid of new things often held it back, causing it to lose to more seasoned Pokémon.

4. Gible
Gible first appeared in the Pokémon world back in Generation 4 and quickly became a fan favorite, largely due to its powerful final evolution, Garchomp. In the popular Diamond and Pearl series, Ash met a young Gible while traveling through the Sinnoh region. This Gible was working hard to learn the powerful Draco Meteor attack, which would become its signature move. After Ash and his friends helped Gible train and protected it from Team Rocket, the little dragon happily joined Ash’s team.
Honestly, Gible was a total standout on Ash’s team, even without ever evolving! It became a real force to be reckoned with, taking down some seriously tough opponents thanks to its incredible Draco Meteor. I mean, it even landed some major hits on Tobias’ Darkrai – a Legendary Pokémon! It really helped secure the win for Ash. But, and it pains me to say it, a lot of us fans, myself included, feel like Gible deserved to evolve. If it had, I’m convinced it would have been one of Ash’s absolute strongest Pokémon, no question.
3. Goodra
Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon are incredibly strong creatures, tougher and more powerful than most, but not quite at the level of true Legendary Pokémon. Because of their strength, they’re popular choices for trainers aiming to become the very best. Ash has trained several of these powerful Pokémon over the years, with Goodra being a fan favorite. Goodra started as a timid Goomy, afraid of Bug and Fairy-type Pokémon, but Ash helped it grow into a fierce and capable fighter.
Goodra was a powerful and durable Pokémon, making it a valuable member of Ash’s team and one of his most defensively solid partners. It won against several strong opponents, such as Clemont’s Luxray and Sawyer’s Slurpuff, by withstanding heavy attacks and hitting back hard. Because of Goodra’s strength and bulk, Ash had to adjust his typical fast-paced battle style. However, some viewers feel Goodra’s overall impact on the story could have been greater, and that it wasn’t used to its full potential.
2. Dracovish
Throughout his many adventures in the Pokémon anime, Ash Ketchum only obtained a couple of Fossil Pokémon. Dracovish, which joined his team during the Journeys series, is probably the more memorable of the two. While its cute appearance – big eyes and a friendly smile – might suggest it’s gentle, Dracovish actually possessed incredible power, rivaling even some smaller Legendary Pokémon.
Dracovish was remarkably fast and strong, rivaling even the Pokémon used by top champions like Iris and Leon. Its most defining feature was its incredibly powerful bite, capable of dealing massive damage. Interestingly, Dracovish had a quirky habit of biting Ash whenever it was released from its Poké Ball – a strange display of affection that made it a fan favorite. This combination of power and eccentricity made it a beloved Pokémon.
1. Dragonite
Pokémon has been around for over twenty years, and while each new generation adds exciting things to the series, many fans still consider the original 151 Pokémon to be the best. This is partly due to nostalgia, but also because this first generation includes some truly memorable and powerful creatures, like the fan-favorite Dragonite.
Ash caught a Dragonair, which proved to be an extraordinary Pokémon. Initially, the Dragonair couldn’t fly and needed Ash and his friends’ help to train. Through their close bond, the Dragonair evolved into a powerful Dragonite, overcoming its gentle nature to become a strong and courageous fighter. Dragonite’s strength was crucial in many of Ash’s victories, including the final battle against Leon, where Ash earned the title of World Champion.
Dragonite won fans over with both its strength and its kind personality. It wasn’t just a powerful Pokémon; Ash’s Dragonite was a gentle giant who loved to hug and make friends rather than fight. This endearing quality made it a quick favorite among viewers, and many consider it to be the best Dragon-type Pokémon Ash ever had.
