Pokemon Champions Gave Me a Very Good Reason to Go Back to Legends: Z-A After 669 Hours

I’ve been playing Pokemon Champions, which just came out, and honestly, it’s a pretty fun battling game if you’re into VGC or want to get into competitive Pokemon. It’s not perfect – I have some issues with the Pokemon available and the items, plus there are definitely glitches. I had one crazy experience where an opponent’s Rotom Wash Tricked my Hisuian Zoroark’s Choice Scarf, then somehow after the Rotom used Hydro Pump, my Zoroark moved first even though the Rotom wasn’t Scarfed anymore and there was no Tailwind! It just didn’t make any sense, but even with those issues, I’m still enjoying it.

I’m getting off track, but Pokemon Champions has a solid base to become the go-to platform for VGC (Video Game Championships). It just needs more development. I’m still excited to play and improve my competitive battling skills, so I’ve been building a team where each Pokemon has a specific job and can counter different opponents. I’ve chosen Mega Floette as my Mega Evolution Pokemon.

I’ve spent nearly 670 hours playing Pokemon Legends: Z-A since it came out, but I hadn’t completed everything. Specifically, I hadn’t obtained Mega Floette because it needed a lot of repetitive gameplay that I wasn’t willing to do. However, Pokemon Champions required me to do just that, and I’m actually happy it did!

Why Mega Floette is OP in Pokemon Champions

I hadn’t fully finished Pokemon Legends: Z-A recently because I hadn’t completed the Mega Floette quest, but I was already familiar with the story. Even so, the conversation between Urbain and Jett at the end really struck me – I connected with it personally because of my own experiences with family problems and difficult relationships. Plus, I was thrilled to finally get my Eternal Flower Floette and the Floettite needed to Mega Evolve it!

If you want to obtain Mega Floette and its Eternal Flower form, you’ll need to earn a Challenger’s Ticket 15 times by battling the corresponding trainer each time. After winning 15 battles, a short story sequence will play, and you’ll receive AZ’s Floette, which you can then send to Pokémon Champions through Pokémon HOME.

Mega Floette is shaping up to be one of the strongest Mega Evolutions introduced in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Its power comes from the new Fairy Aura ability, which wasn’t available until Pokemon Champions. Fairy Aura boosts the damage of Fairy-type moves by 33%, and combined with Mega Floette’s already high Special Attack, it can knock out many opponents in competitive battles with a single hit. A common strategy involves moves like Dazzling Gleam (to hit both opponents in Double Battles), Moonblast or Light of Ruin for focused damage, Calm Mind to further increase its power and defense, and Protect to stay alive. Many players believe this combination makes Mega Floette overwhelmingly powerful.

My Best Pokemon Champions Mega Floette Team Explained

Mega Floette is currently one of the strongest Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Champions, easily ranking in the top three. Its powerful Moonblast attack can knock out most opponents, and even resisting its Light of Ruin is difficult, especially if Mega Floette gets the chance to boost its stats with Calm Mind. While it’s not incredibly fast or durable, if left unchecked, it can quickly sweep through an entire team. I built my team around this strategy, and ended up using:

  • Eternal Flower Floette (Mega Floette) as a bulky special attacker.
  • Aegislash as a physically bulky attacker with physical moves like Iron Head and Shadow Sneak.
  • Gyarados as a bulky physical attacker with Intimidate for support.
  • Farigiraf as a bulky special attacker with support moves, particularly Helping Hand.
  • Sableye as a support Pokemon with Foul Play to OHKO Basculegion.
  • Volcarona as a bulky support with the option of setting up Tailwind.

I expect to make changes to this team as I continue testing it, because it’s not quite ideal yet. The biggest issue is that my Pokémon are generally slow, and I don’t use items like Choice Scarf to boost their speed. Also, I currently rely solely on Floette to defeat Archaludon, which is a very powerful Pokémon in the current competitive scene, especially in rain-based teams. Finally, the team struggles against sandstorm teams if they land a lucky flinch with Rock Slide, and my own gameplay isn’t flawless.

Honestly, despite the huge time commitment, I’m really glad I got Mega Floette in Pokemon Champions. It totally carried me through a bunch of battles! There was one match where I set up Tailwind and then landed two Light of Ruins in a row for instant knockouts – though poor Floette fainted from the recoil! It took a lot of grinding – around 30-40 hours, and yeah, spending $70 on Z-A wasn’t ideal – but it was worth it. I was surprised by how good the Pokemon story actually was, especially after enjoying Pokemon Scarlet and Violet so much. Looking back, I’m happy I jumped back into Pokemon Legends: Z-A after all this time, and I might even try to hunt for some shiny Pokemon while I’m at it.
