It’s incredibly rare to find shiny Pokémon while playing Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, but one player recently had amazing luck. These older games have a couple of challenges when it comes to shiny Pokémon. Unlike newer versions, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen don’t have a Shiny Charm to help, and a breeding technique called the Masuda Method isn’t available. Plus, the chances of finding a shiny Pokémon are very low – only about 1 in 8,192 Pokémon encountered will be shiny, half the rate of more recent games.
Modern Pokémon games have made it easier to find shiny Pokémon. Older games had odds of 1 in 8,192, but now they’re closer to 1 in 4,096. Using items like the Shiny Charm, participating in mass outbreaks, or eating special sandwiches can improve your chances even further, potentially bringing the odds down to 1 in 512. However, these methods don’t work in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. While the most strategically valuable shiny Pokémon varies, many fans consider Ditto to have the coolest shiny design, and one player recently found one completely by chance.
Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen‘s Shiny Ditto Explained
A Pokémon trainer named softbeat-la recently shared their luck on Reddit: they found a shiny blue Ditto at level 25 completely by chance! This is a big deal, especially considering some players spent over 100 hours trying to find a shiny starter Pokémon in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Finding a shiny Pokémon without even trying is an incredible feeling. What makes shiny Ditto even more unique is that while it has its own shiny form, it transforms into other Pokémon and takes on their shiny colors instead.

Ditto’s Transform ability can create shiny versions of Pokémon, mimicking their unique colors. For instance, if a shiny Ditto copies a Gyarados, it will appear as the classic red Gyarados from the older games. Similarly, copying a Charizard results in a black and red shiny Charizard. The only difference is that a shiny Ditto’s transformed form will always have a slightly translucent appearance. Despite this minor detail, this method is a rare way to obtain shiny Pokémon in FireRed and LeafGreen, and it allows players to temporarily have any shiny Pokémon they desire, even if just for a single battle.
Ditto is often considered a great shiny Pokémon, either because of its original color or its ability to transform into any other Pokémon’s shiny form. However, in the FireRed and LeafGreen games, Ditto is actually quite weak. This is because it lacks the Imposter ability, which it gained in later games. Imposter automatically makes Ditto transform into a copy of its opponent when it enters battle. Without this ability, you have to manually tell Ditto to transform, putting it at a disadvantage.

Transform is unique because it relies on Ditto’s incredibly low stats. Ditto has only 48 in every stat, making it slow, frail, and with very little HP. This means it’s easily damaged or knocked out, especially against stronger opponents. While a much higher-level Ditto could overcome this, it’s generally not a reliable strategy for challenging the Elite Four and Champion in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. Despite this, softbeat-la was fortunate to discover this rare and shiny Ditto.
