Okay, so I just started this research thing, and right away I got 500 Stardust and 5 Poke Balls – nice! Then you pick a path to focus on: Explore, Catch, or Battle. I’ve checked them all out, and here’s what you get from each, and honestly, which one I think is the best!

All ‘Choose Your Path Timed Research’ Tasks and Rewards in Pokemon GO

If you choose the ‘Explore’ path in the Timed Research, you’ll earn five times the usual XP when you spin PokeStops – this bonus lasts until May 12th. This path also includes two simple tasks, each with just one step to complete.

  • Explore 5 km (x10 Great Balls)
  • Spin 50 PokeStop or Gyms (x10 Ultra Balls)
    • Total Reward: 3 Pinap Berries, 5 Rare Candies

Choosing the ‘Catch’ route in Pokemon GO will give you 1.5x XP for catching Pokemon with Nice, Great, or Excellent Throws. It also unlocks special research tasks and rewards.

  • Make 15 Excellent Throws (x10 Great Balls)
  • Make 50 Curveball Throws (x10 Ultra Balls)
    • Total Reward: 3 Pinap Berries, 5 Rare Candies

If you choose the ‘Battle’ path, you’ll earn an additional 5000 XP for finishing Raids. Here’s what you’ll get for completing research tasks along that path:

  • Win 5 Raids (x10 Great Balls)
  • Use 25 Supereffective Charged Attacks (x10 Ultra Balls)
    • Total Reward: 3 Pinap Berries, 5 Rare Candies

Should You Choose the Battle, Explore, or Catch Path?

If you don’t get out much to play Pokemon GO, I believe the Catch path is the way to go. You don’t need to do raids or travel around to earn extra XP—simply catching Pokemon is enough. It’s also pretty easy to get good throws during encounters, meaning you can rack up a lot of XP just by playing at home.

If you’re planning a trip with a lot of walking, like exploring a new city or attending an outdoor event, choosing the Explore route could be a good idea. Just be sure to go somewhere with plenty of PokeStops so you can spin them and earn that 5x XP bonus!
