Players who are already at a high level in Pokémon GO might find it difficult to reach the new maximum level. Recent leaks suggest reaching level 80 will require a significant amount of effort. A major update to the leveling system is planned for October 15th, and some fans are concerned about the changes, particularly if the leaked information is accurate.
When *Pokémon GO* launched in July 2016, players could reach a maximum level of 40. Even though they could keep earning experience points, they couldn’t level up any further. This changed in 2020 when an update increased the level cap to 50. However, to reach the highest levels, players now had to complete special research tasks at each of the top 10 levels, adding extra challenges for those aiming to be the very best.
As a huge *Pokémon GO* player, I was so excited to hear about the level cap increasing to 80! But I was also wondering how they’d handle the Level-Up Research tasks at those higher levels. Now, thanks to some data mining shared on Reddit’s TheSilphRoad, we have a better idea of what we’ll need to do to get from level 71 all the way to 80. Apparently, a lot of the tasks are similar to what we already did to hit level 50, just pushed back by 30 levels. It’s good to know it’ll feel somewhat familiar as we continue leveling up!
Pokemon GO’s Rumored New Upper Level Requirements

- Level 71: Earn 15 platinum medals, power up Legendary or Mythical Pokemon 20 times, make 999 Nice Throws, catch 100 Pokemon in a single day
- Level 72: Earn 20 platinum medals, complete a route seven days in a row, use 200 supereffective Charged Attacks, earn 1 million Stardust
- Level 73: Earn 25 platinum medals, purify 100 Shadow Pokemon, power up three Pokemon to their max CP, win 30 raids
- Level 74: Earn 30 platinum medals, level up a Max Move 20 times, explore 200 km, complete 250 Field Research Tasks
- Level 75: Earn 34 platinum medals, make 999 Great Throws, hatch 75 eggs, send 500 gifts to friends
- Level 76: Earn 38 platinum medals, defeat 100 Team GO Rocket grunts, explore 300 km, catch 200 Pokemon in a single day
- Level 77: Earn 41 platinum medals, win 100 Max Battles, power up seven Pokemon to their maximum CP, make 10 trades with Pokemon caught at least 300 km apart
- Level 78: Earn 44 platinum medals, earn 400 hearts with Buddy Pokemon, explore 400 km, complete 500 Field Research Tasks

- Level 80: Earn 50 platinum medals, win 80 trainer battles in the GO Battle League, make 999 Excellent Throws, win 80 raids
Completing certain tasks in the game can take a long time, but aren’t too hard – for example, throwing a Pokémon 999 times or purifying 100 Shadow Pokémon. Other tasks are much more challenging and rely on luck, like getting 50 Lucky Pokémon through trades to reach a specific level. Many players aren’t happy with the newly discovered list of requirements, and some who are already at a high level say they don’t plan on repeating particularly difficult tasks.
