In approximately three months, the video game “Pokemon Legends: Z-A” is set to be released, available on both the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 on October 16 of this year. The Nintendo Switch 2 version offers improved performance and a consistent 60 frames per second throughout the game. This is the first major release since “Pokemon Scarlet and Violet” and their DLCs, which marked a break from Game Freak’s traditional three-year development cycle for new mainline titles. It’s expected that the next generation, Gen 10, will be released sometime next year. For months now, there have been leaks about “Pokemon Legends: Z-A”, and assuming no significant surprises, it’s anticipated to create a stir with its new Mega Evolutions.
It appears that the upcoming game won’t introduce any fresh creatures or Pokedex entries, but there’s widespread agreement that it will introduce numerous Mega Evolutions for existing Pokemon instead. Previous leaks suggested a total of 27 new Mega Evolutions, but this number has been revised down to 26 following the alleged removal of Zeraora’s Mega during development. Notably, the new Mega Evolution lineup also includes one for all starters from both Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Gen 6, such as Feraligatr.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Mega Feraligatr May Be a Double-Edged Sword
In the upcoming game, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, there are rumors suggesting that Mega Feraligatr will receive a new type, Water/Dragon, and a redesign to reflect this change. This transformation is said to give Feraligatr a menacing, red-toned facial and snout armor, resembling dragon features more closely. The idea of having a Water/Dragon starter, especially for a popular character like Feraligatr, generates excitement, but it may not always be beneficial in terms of battle effectiveness.
In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, battles will differ from those in other series games, taking on a real-time strategy feel. This includes the option to dodge and maneuver around opponent’s attacks. The Mega Evolution gauge meter suggests that Megas might be more or less accessible compared to Generation 6. Notably, Mega Feraligatr’s new type combination could be stronger than its regular Water type, but it doesn’t seem to significantly enhance its overall abilities.
Type Combination | Weaknesses | Resistances | Offensive |
Water | 2x vs. Electric, Grass | 0.5x vs. Steel, Fire, Water, and Ice | 2x vs. Ground, Rock, and Fire, 0.5x vs. Water, Grass, Dragon |
Water/Dragon | 2x vs. Fairy, Dragon | 0.5x vs. Steel, 0.25x vs. Fire and Water | 2x vs. Ground, Rock, Fire, and Dragon |
In comparing Feraligatr and Mega Feraligatr, it’s important to note that their inherent weaknesses remain consistent. This is due to the prevalence of Electric and Grass types in the Pokémon world, while Fairy and Dragon types might inflict more damage. As for resistances, the Water/Dragon type combination loses its resistance to Ice but gains a stronger resistance to Fire and Water. The main distinction lies in their offensive capabilities: lacking any moves other than Water can be disadvantageous against Water, Grass, and Dragon Pokémon. However, since Feraligatr usually employs non-STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) moves, the addition of Dragon as a STAB type becomes more significant.
In the context of Pokémon, when a Pokémon performs a move that matches its own type, it’s referred to as a Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB). This means that such Pokémon will deal increased damage with these specific moves compared to if they were using a move of a different type.
Why Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Leaked Mega Feraligatr is a Mixed Bag
In essence, while Feraligatr and its Mega Evolution in Pokemon Legends: Z-A might not have significant differences, it could largely boil down to statistical advantages. This evolution may prove useful against robust Grass or Electric Pokémon, but it may not deliver the anticipated powerful blow that one might expect from a starter’s Mega Evolution. For now, fans should manage their expectations accordingly.
