A Pokemon Trading Card Game player reached the final round of a regional championship, but unfortunately had to withdraw due to a minor error. The good news is they’ve still qualified for the Pokemon World Championships!
Playing the Pokemon Trading Card Game is enjoyable for many people worldwide. But official Pokemon TCG tournaments are a different experience. They often involve long days with numerous matches and have very specific rules – for example, dice must be standard six-sided dice with rounded edges. Unfortunately, one of these rules recently caused a major problem for a player in a tournament.
Pokemon TCG Regional Championships Ends Due to Small Mistake
At the final day of the Pokemon Pittsburgh Regional Championships, a player was disqualified after a card count revealed his deck had only 59 cards instead of the required 60. The issue arose during the championship match between Abaan Ahmed and Liam Halliburton, when judges stopped the game to verify the decks.
The issue started during Ahmed’s previous match against Calvin Connor. In the excitement of winning, Ahmed accidentally knocked one of his Munkidori cards onto Connor’s side of the table. Both players were using the same type of deck, so Connor mistakenly picked up the card, thinking it was his. Ahmed then proceeded to the Grand Final without realizing the mix-up. Tournament rules state that decks must contain exactly 60 cards. Instead of disputing the situation, Ahmed chose to forfeit the match, awarding the regional title to his opponent, Halliburton.

Despite not winning the Pittsburg Regional, Ahmed has already qualified for the Pokemon TCG World Championship in San Francisco, California, in August 2026, thanks to his previous victories. This experience will likely make him double-check his deck more carefully in the future. It’s good this happened now, before the World Championship, because losing due to a small mistake at that level would have been incredibly disappointing.
