A creative Pokémon fan has come up with a fascinating idea connecting Mimikyu and Clefairy. Mimikyu, a Pokémon introduced in Generation 7, is well-loved by many because of its sad story and timid personality. While Mimikyu is known for disguising itself as Pikachu, this theory suggests that Clefairy might play a bigger role in its origins.
In the world of Pokémon, Mimikyu is a lonely Ghost/Fairy-type Pokémon that tries to make friends by disguising itself as Pikachu. It hopes Pikachu’s popularity will draw others to it. However, legend says that anyone who sees what’s under the costume will be cursed. Sometimes, glimpses of Mimikyu’s real form can still be seen – like a shadowy claw appearing during attacks.
Pokemon Fan Theory Suggests Mimikyu Could Be Closely Related to Clefairy
A popular theory on the Pokemon subreddit, proposed by user CnidariaCoral, posits that Mimikyu is actually based on a Clefairy – specifically, a Clefairy plush toy. Interestingly, Clefairy was initially intended to be the main mascot of the Pokemon franchise, and even appeared as Red’s starter Pokemon in the original manga. Ultimately, Pikachu replaced Clefairy as Ash Ketchum’s partner in the anime because creators thought Pikachu would be more popular, establishing Pikachu as the iconic face of Pokemon instead.
I recently came across this really interesting theory about Mimikyu! Basically, someone thinks Mimikyu’s whole deal – being so obsessed with looking like Pikachu – stems from the fact that Pikachu ended up being the face of Pokemon instead of Clefairy. It makes sense because, in the games, the Poke Doll is usually designed to look like a Clefairy! The idea is that a Clefairy doll got super jealous seeing all the Pikachu dolls selling, so it somehow came to life and decided to disguise itself as Pikachu to finally get some love from fans.
The idea that Mimikyu is based on a forgotten toy is supported by several clues. Both Mimikyu and Clefairy share the Fairy-type, and Mimikyu even has a unique Z-Move called “Let’s Snuggle Forever” in Pokemon Sun and Moon, suggesting a connection to comforting toys. The fact that players first meet Mimikyu in an abandoned store during a Ghost-type trial in Sun and Moon further supports the theory that it’s the ghost of a plush toy left behind.

Some fans have a fascinating theory linking Clefairy and Clefable to Ghost-type Pokémon, suggesting Gengar is Clefable’s shadow – a ghostly parallel. However, most people agree this is unlikely to be official lore, as Mimikyu already has a well-established backstory. Despite being just a fan idea, this theory offers compelling reasons to consider a deeper connection between Mimikyu and Clefairy, both of which are mysterious Pokémon within the franchise.
