Interestingly, Clefairy was initially intended to be the main mascot of the Pokemon franchise, and even appeared as Red’s starter Pokemon in the original manga. Ultimately, Pikachu replaced Clefairy as Ash Ketchum’s partner in the anime because creators thought Pikachu would be more popular, establishing Pikachu as the iconic face of Pokemon instead.
