The new Pokémon games, Pokémon Winds and Waves, are scheduled to release next year. While the 2027 release date surprised many fans, it might actually be a good thing. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet launched with significant performance problems, which negatively impacted the game’s reputation throughout its unusually long lifespan. Because of this, fans were happy with what they saw in the reveal trailer for Pokémon Winds and Waves on Pokémon Day. The trailer showed off the three new starter Pokémon, a glimpse of the new region, some returning Pokémon, and two unique versions of Pikachu.
Some players aren’t thrilled with the new characters, Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu from Pokemon Winds and Waves, and that’s understandable – they look quite different from a typical Pikachu. While they seem like just unusual Pikachu companions who will assist you on your adventure, there’s likely more to them than meets the eye. Clues like their outfits matching the game’s logo, the unique outfits worn by the player characters, the mysterious cloud in the trailer, and earlier leaks strongly suggest that these Pikachu variants are closely connected to the legendary Pokemon featured in the tenth generation of games.
Pokemon Winds and Waves’ Box Legendaries Are Already Clear
The main Legendary Pokémon for the next generation (Gen 10) haven’t been shown yet, but they’ll probably be a key factor in deciding which version of the game fans prefer. Traditionally, each version gets its own exclusive Legendary Pokémon, and this often influences which game players choose. For the upcoming Pokémon Winds and Waves, there are already some hints about what to expect.
- According to Pokemon Gen 10’s Teraleak 2, the box Legendaries will be inspired by a “wind grandpa and wave grandma,” a detail that came to light in October 2025.
- Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu fit the “wind grandpa and wave grandma” archetypes from the leaks.
- Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ leaks pointed to a battle gimmick called Rebirth where Pokemon could be reborn after being defeated and get special Reborn forms in some cases, which could be the case for Pikachu.
- Importantly, the Pokemon Winds and Waves official trailer includes a scene where you can see a Pokemon’s shadow appear beyond the protagonist’s room, where a regular Pikachu is looking. It could be a distorted Pikachu, like in Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ leaked battle gimmick, but it could also be that Mr. Windychu’s and Ms. Wavychu’s real form is something else entirely — the box Legendaries themselves, projecting a distorted shadow because they are not really Pikachu.

Considering everything, it’s likely the Legendary Pokémon in the next generation (Gen 10) will be Flying/Electric and Water/Electric types. This fits well with the idea that Pikachu might play a role in their design. Plus, these specific type combinations aren’t very common throughout the Pokémon series.
Pokemon Winds and Waves’ Windychu and Wavychu May be Other Pokemon in Disguise
Given that the new Pokemon Winds and Waves game is based on Southeast Asia – a region rich in stories about supernatural beings disguised as people or animals – it’s likely that the characters Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu are hiding something. This could be a fresh approach to Legendary Pokemon, as they usually don’t transform into other creatures. While Mew can change forms, it’s a Mythical Pokemon, and shapeshifting isn’t as central to its identity as it is for Pokemon like Ditto and Zoroark.
It might sound odd, but there’s a good chance Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu are more than just human-like characters resembling Pikachu. If this is true, it likely won’t be revealed until the game is released. One idea is that you’ll be able to use them in battles, and then they’ll transform into the game’s Legendary Pokémon through a mechanic called ‘Rebirth,’ revealing their real forms. Right now, this is just a theory based on current leaks, but it seems to fit the available information if those leaks are accurate.
