When Pokopia came out earlier this year, it was a huge hit with both players and critics, becoming the highest-rated game in the Pokemon series and of 2026. However, a new game released in May 2026 has now taken the title of “highest-rated game of the year.” Pokopia is still a truly excellent game and will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the best of 2026, but it’s no longer at the very top of the list.
According to OpenCritic, a website that averages scores from many game reviewers, Pokopia is currently the second highest-rated game. It has an average score of 90, which is a fantastic achievement – only a few games have reached that level. For comparison, Resident Evil Requiem scored an 89, and Lost and Found Co. also earned a 90, tying with Pokopia. Currently, Mixtape holds the top spot.
Mixtape is the Highest Rated Game of 2026
The game Mixtape launched on May 7th and has received incredible reviews, currently making it the highest-rated game of the year. Critics love it, giving it an average score of 93 out of 100, and 100% of them recommend it. Out of the 33 reviews so far, 15 are perfect scores, and 12 more give it a 9 out of 10 or higher. That means only 6 reviews haven’t given it a 9 or 10! While this could change as more reviews come in – and especially when big games like Grand Theft Auto 6 are released later in the year – it’s still a remarkable achievement, even if it doesn’t stay at the top spot for long. Beating out Pokopia to claim the number one position is a huge win.

It’s also remarkable how much a game’s length seems to matter to players. While Mixtape can be finished in around three hours, and fully completed in just a few more, a game doesn’t need to be long to be great. Pokopia might offer more playtime, but a short, well-made game can be beautiful and satisfying in its own right. It’s encouraging to see that this isn’t being held against it, particularly considering the game’s style.
If you haven’t heard of it, Mixtape is a story-driven adventure game created by Beethoven and Dinosaur and published by Annapurna Interactive. The game follows three friends as they spend one final night together, revisiting important moments from their lives through a series of memories—all set to a fantastic soundtrack. The developers describe Mixtape as a way to get lost in the experiences of being a teenager, from skateboarding and exploring abandoned places to simpler moments like kissing someone for the first time or sharing a last dance.

The positive reviews for Mixtape were likely boosted by its heartwarming story and nostalgic feel, and it will be exciting to see what Beethoven and Dinosaur create next. Right now, the studio deserves credit for earning such praise from critics, even when competing with the popular Pokémon series.
