PS Plus Extra Subscriber Count Sees Big Decline in July 2024

PS Plus Extra Subscriber Count Sees Big Decline in July 2024

Highlights

  • Player numbers for PS Plus Extra and Premium games dropped by 50% in July 2024, making it a low-performing month.
  • The July 2024 lineup included well-regarded titles like Remnant 2 and Crisis Core, but player interest still declined.
  • Despite the weaker Essential selection, the more expensive tiers failed to drive player interest in July 2024, so it will be interesting to see if August’s lineup is stronger to get more eyes on the higher tiers of the service.

As a dedicated PlayStation gamer with years of experience under my belt, I was quite disappointed to see the steep decline in player numbers for PS Plus Extra and Premium games during July 2024. The lineup included some highly-anticipated titles like Remnant 2 and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion that I personally was looking forward to playing, but the player interest just didn’t seem to materialize as expected.

In July 2024, there was a significant drop of approximately 50% in the number of players engaging with games in the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium catalogs. This marked July as one of the least active months for these services in the year 2024.

In July 2024, the PS Plus Extra catalog featured nine highly-acclaimed games including “Remnant 2,” “Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion,” “No More Heroes 3,” and “Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes Complete Edition.” Additionally, the PS Plus Premium offering brought back three timeless classics from the PSP and PS2 libraries – “Jeanne d’Arc,” “Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters,” and “Summoner.” Although the July 2024 lineup for PS Plus Essential didn’t boast as many notable titles, it appears that this hasn’t significantly increased demand for the pricier tiers.

Based on analysis of data from over 3.1 million PlayStation Network accounts, TrueTrophies reported a significant decrease of approximately 48.67% in the number of players for PS Plus Extra and Premium games in July 2024 compared to the previous month’s offerings. This decline is puzzling since Remnant 2, which is currently the third most popular game on PS Plus Extra this year, was released during this period, and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion saw a massive increase of over 1,000% in active players after joining the service. Surprisingly, July 2024 ranked as the third weakest month for PS Plus Extra and Premium on TrueTrophies’ charts.

PS Plus Extra’s June Bonus Games Skewed Player Counts, But July is Still Behind

As a dedicated gamer and avid PS Plus subscriber, I’ve noticed that the addition of 14 bonus games in June 2024 significantly boosted player numbers. However, when I examined the data without including the players from the Days of Play bonus titles, it appeared that July 2024 trailed behind by a considerable margin, with a difference of approximately 18.77%. Surprisingly, despite the buzz surrounding critically-acclaimed classics like “Jeanne d’Arc” in the PS Plus Premium tier, they didn’t seem to generate much excitement among players. Even after the highly anticipated debut of “Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus” in June 2024, which broke records as the biggest classic premiere on Premium that year, the impact on July seemed minimal.

As a long-time PlayStation gamer with a deep interest in the platform’s offerings and community trends, I cannot help but be intrigued by recent reports of Sony’s PSN usage statistics. However, it is essential to acknowledge that these figures only represent a fraction of the PlayStation user base – specifically, 3.1 million accounts. Consequently, we must exercise caution when interpreting these findings as indicative of the broader gaming population.
