Over the years, Eiichiro Oda, renowned creator of “One Piece,” has gained legendary status. Yet, his path to success was not a certain one; indeed, there were many skeptics within the field who questioned whether he would ultimately succeed.

In the end, I managed to prove all my doubters wrong by becoming the world’s most renowned mangaka! My series just keeps expanding, and it’s all thanks to that last-ditch effort of mine.

Oda Was Rejected Multiple Times Before One Piece

His Romance Dawn One Shot is What Changed Everything

One Piece, a renowned manga series, holds the record as the largest in history. The sales figures are astonishingly high, and no other series can compare. To add to the wonderment, One Piece has propelled its creator, Oda, into the top 10 most successful authors globally. It’s nearly unbelievable that Oda, such a manga titan today, once came close to failing as a mangaka.

For several years, Oda’s story ideas were consistently turned down by editors. This likely took a toll on his spirits, as it appeared he was repeatedly falling short. However, Oda persevered and decided to make one more attempt. His ultimate strategy was to create Romance Dawn, a standalone manga that he released a year before One Piece in 1996. It’s chilling to contemplate the possibility that Oda might have given up prior to this, and the world may never have known One Piece.

In 1996, just prior to his last endeavor that ultimately led to great achievements, this is the message Oda had shared.

For the past two harrowing years, I’ve created numerous manga comics, but each submission was turned down by my editor. The dream of becoming a mangaka from my youth was growing dim with doubt. This pirate romance manga, Romance Dawn, is my final hope. Go, Luffy! Help me realize my dream as a mangaka!” – Eiichiro Oda

What is Romance Dawn?

Oda’s One Shot Chapter

Thinking about Romance Dawn, it’s often the debut arc of One Piece that pops up. Yet, what Oda is mentioning here is actually the One-Shot precursor to it, both being named Romance Dawn in the series.

Back in the day, approximately six years ago, there was a brief One Piece spin-off called “Romance Dawn” which served as a precursor to the main series. Some fans might recall that it received a single episode anime adaptation. The number of this anime episode was 907 and, just like the original one-shot manga, it was named “Romance Dawn.

In simpler terms, the standalone comic book titled “Romance Dawn” had a total of 50 pages, and it was published on the 4th of August, 1996, which is approximately 29 years back in time.

This tale highlights familiar figures from the initial arc of One Piece, including Monkey D. Luffy, along with characters seldom seen outside that single appearance, such as Ann – a girl with blue hair who is not part of the official One Piece universe, but was modeled after Nami in a one-off illustration.
