Resident Evil: Biggest Betrayals In The Franchise, Ranked

As a seasoned survivor of the ever-unpredictable world of Resident Evil, I’ve seen my fair share of betrayals that could make even the toughest of hearts tremble. But if there’s one thing that stands out among all the deceit and treachery, it’s the infamous betrayal by Albert Wesker in the original Resident Evil game.

In a world where power-crazed dictators and obsessive scientists are determined to dominate the entire globe (you know what you know), it’s inevitable that there will be numerous instances of betrayal, as wealth and influence can easily shift one’s loyalty. Once the T-Virus contaminated Raccoon City and triggered a citywide outbreak, everyone was fighting for their own interests, and associations with questionable groups led to betrayals everywhere. To provide a contrast to the noble protagonists, Resident Evil features a number of characters who are more concerned with saving themselves than their allies, even if it means selling out those closest to them or making a quick profit.

Regrettably, acts of betrayal are fairly frequent within the universe of Resident Evil, given the far-reaching influence of the Umbrella Corporation and its numerous affiliates. Spanning beyond Raccoon City, this power extends globally, making it no surprise that characters might be lured by offers of wealth, security, or divine status, leading them to prioritize their own interests. Here are some significant betrayals in Resident Evil that continue to resonate, even years after they occurred.

5 Ada Uses Leon As A Pawn (Resident Evil 2)

Leon Realizes That Ada Isn’t Real FBI

Resident Evil: Biggest Betrayals In The Franchise, Ranked

In essence, Ada compensates for her betrayal of Leon in the game ‘Resident Evil 2’ by providing him with a rocket launcher to aid him in defeating the Super Tyrant, but it doesn’t erase the pain of the deception. Since Ada Wong is already known for having secret agendas, it’s no surprise that she would change allegiances at a moment’s notice. Initially, Ada was employed by an organization that competed with Umbrella to retrieve a sample of the G-Virus from the NEST lab. She crosses paths with Leon, who also seeks the G-Virus for unrelated purposes. When they reunite, each in possession of the G-Virus, Leon discovers from Annette Birkin that Ada is not an FBI agent, as she had represented, but instead functions as a mercenary.

Following Leon’s discovery, he keeps the G-Virus sample hidden and confronts Ada about manipulating him in a larger scheme. Annette shoots Ada, causing her to hang precariously as Leon tries to rescue her. This moment is deeply emotional, amplified by Nick Apostolides’ portrayal of Leon and his subtle facial expressions, along with the music that softens to emphasize the growing affection between them. The betrayal leaves a lasting impact on Leon, despite Ada letting him down numerous times in the future.

4 Jessica & Raymond Double-Cross Parker & Jill (Resident Evil: Revelations)

Morgan Lansdale’s Mole Turns Out To Be Jessica With Raymond In On It Too

Resident Evil: Biggest Betrayals In The Franchise, Ranked

Jessica Sherawat and Raymond Vester may not have been crowd favorites in Resident Evil: Revelations, but they are certainly undervalued characters within the series. Jessica, who harbors feelings for Chris Redfield, seems to engage in a complex, intermittent romance with Parker, who appears to fuel her flirtatious tendencies. Raymond, on the other hand, is the classic mysterious loner among the supporting cast, and his motivations often remain shrouded in mystery.

Initially, Raymond seemed to have rescued Parker, but in the closing credits, he handed over a vial of the t-Abyss Virus to Jessica. This act indicated their collaboration from the beginning. Both characters appeared suspicious since their introduction, so while their betrayal wasn’t entirely unexpected, it had severe consequences for the future. Although Chris, Jill, and Parker managed to survive the wreckage, the t-Abyss Virus – possibly combined with other mutagenic viruses – set the stage for future events beyond Resident Evil: Revelations.

3 Nikolai Causes Mikhail Victor’s Death (Resident Evil 3)

Nikolai Locks Jill & Mikhail Out Of The Next Carriage When Nemesis Attacks

Resident Evil: Biggest Betrayals In The Franchise, Ranked

In Resident Evil 3, when Jill Valentine encounters Mikhail Victor, he isn’t exactly friendly or lenient, given his platoon’s unfortunate fate, leaving only him, Carlos, and Tyrell alive. Conversely, Nikolai Zinoviev, also known as the “Silver Wolf,” is infamous for his self-serving actions, and in Mikhail’s case, he continues this pattern of behavior. The UBCS were dispatched to Raccoon City to save civilians, but a mysterious group reached out to Nikolai intentionally to disrupt and weaken the UBCS mission. Once Jill Valentine became a nuisance to this secret employer, she was given an additional assignment: to be assassinated, a task often delegated to Nemesis. Being resilient, Jill managed to survive, which greatly annoyed Nikolai.

Following Jill’s restoration of power on the final train departing from the city, she readies herself to depart with Mikhail, Nikolai, and the evacuees. However, when Nemesis pursues Jill, Nikolai hastily moves to the next carriage and locks Jill and Mikhail out, asserting that Nemesis isn’t interested in him. This treacherous act not only imperils Jill but also leads to Mikhail’s demise as he detonates an explosion meant for Nemesis, unintentionally ending his own life. Nikolai would later confess to Jill about his deceitful motives: he had received a substantial bribe to sabotage the UBCS’ plans and provoke Nemesis into attacking Jill. In the end, Nikolai faces retribution when Jill and Carlos leave him for dead before the missile is launched to obliterate Raccoon City.

2 Simmons Destroys Raccoon City & Makes Sherry Do His Bidding (Resident Evil 6)

Jake Muller Threatens To Undermine His Operation, So He Turns On Sherry Birkin

Resident Evil: Biggest Betrayals In The Franchise, Ranked

Derek Simmons plays a pivotal role in all storylines within ‘Resident Evil 6’, as they all intersect. Before the occurrences of ‘Resident Evil 6’, Simmons was the one who orchestrated the total annihilation of Raccoon City, a series of events depicted in both ‘Resident Evil 2’ and ‘Resident Evil 3′. Prior to this incident, he had crossed paths with Ada Wong and developed feelings for her. This encounter marked the beginning of Project Ada. Additionally, Simmons abducted and conducted experiments on Deborah Harper, Helena’s sister, with plans to falsely accuse Leon and Helena of the President’s assassination. The BSAA intervened when Simmons’ treachery came to light, but Chris was also determined to track down “Ada” (Carla), who he believed was responsible for wippping out his squad. Sherry Birkin served as Simmons’ agent during this time, under orders from the U.S. government to escort Jake Muller to a facility where his resistance to the C-Virus could be exploited on a larger scale.

In the course of events, Simmons hired Sherry due to her trusting nature, developed over years in government detention, and found her regenerative powers beneficial. However, when Simmons discovered that Jake Muller might endanger his entire operation with his antibodies against the C-Virus, a strain he had grown dependent on, he ordered B.O.W.s to pursue both Sherry and Jake, disregarding Sherry’s previous loyalty towards him. Later, after Leon shot a rocket launcher at Simmons’ mutated form, sending him tumbling off the roof and impaling him on a courtyard obelisk, Simmons received retribution he deserved.

1 Wesker Betrays S.T.A.R.S. (Resident Evil HD Remaster)

Wesker Is Revealed To Be A Double Agent Working For Umbrella

Resident Evil: Biggest Betrayals In The Franchise, Ranked

In a small town near Raccoon City, outside the Midwest, the S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team was summoned due to reports of bizarre killings that piqued the interest of the local police department. The team followed the commands of Captain Albert Wesker, who would later become infamous in the Resident Evil series as its most lethal bioterrorist and the creator of the Uroboros Virus. This virus granted Wesker extraordinary physical prowess. When Jill, Barry, Chris, and Wesker were dispatched to a dilapidated mansion to probe the murder mystery, Wesker vanished almost instantly, taking with him whoever the player didn’t select as their protagonist. It was Enrico Marini, leader of Bravo Team, who informed Jill or Chris of a traitor within Alpha Team before he was fatally shot by an unidentified gunman. Gradually, either Jill or Chris would discover details about illicit experiments being carried out by Umbrella, and learn that Wesker was working as a spy, aiming to manipulate one of the Tyrants to annihilate the S.T.A.R.S. members and tidy up any remaining loose ends.

In the thrilling world of Resident Evil, I found myself believing that Wesker had met his end at the hands of the Tyrant. However, to my surprise and horror, this wasn’t the last we’d see of him! As events unfolded in subsequent installments, it was revealed that he had miraculously survived, becoming one of Umbrella’s most formidable enforcers.
