As a long-time fan of the Resident Evil franchise, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and excitement when I think about the potential return of one of its most beloved secondary characters: Sherry Birkin. Having grown up with the series, I’ve watched Sherry evolve from an orphaned girl implanted with the G-embryo to a dedicated Agent devoted to stopping bioweapons and rid the world of viruses.

Resident Evil is among gaming’s most successful and long-running horror franchises. Since the launch of the original title in 1996, the Resident Evil series has woven a complicated and interlocking narrative, with its strong cast of central protagonists reappearing in various titles. However, the franchise also boasts a deep cast of secondary characters, some of whom have evolved into full-fledged heroes over decades of narrative. With the Resident Evil franchise due to release its next mainline title, Resident Evil 9, in the coming years, bringing back one character would be a nice full-circle moment.

1) The Resident Evil series boasts more than 30 distinct games, many of which are modern remakes of their original legendary installments. Although the main storyline has taken a new turn, these remakes allow contemporary gamers, as well as those who missed the originals, to explore the early events and characters in the series. The combination of both the mainline games and the remakes creates an environment where familiar characters can reemerge in upcoming releases. For instance, Sherry Birkin, a key character from the classic series, could potentially return due to her significant role in the series’ evolutionary progression.

Sherry Birkin’s Story Spans Nearly the Entirety of Resident Evil’s Classic Series

In the initial three installments of the Resident Evil series, also known as the “Resident Evil Trilogy,” the story focused on the S.T.A.R.S. team’s struggle to live through Umbrella Corporation’s deployment of the T-Virus in Raccoon City and its surroundings. The trilogy brought in numerous secondary characters, but Resident Evil 2 introduced a crucial one: Sherry Birkin. Sherry’s background is linked to her parents, William and Annette Birkin, who were Umbrella scientists at the Arklay Laboratory. Their research into the G-virus resulted in Sherry being neglected. In both the original Resident Evil 2 and its remake, Sherry encounters and teams up with Claire Redfield as they make their escape from the RCPD Precinct.

In the end, Sherry gets taken away from Claire and receives the G-embryo implantation. Just as the game is wrapping up, she’s rescued using an antidote against the G-Virus. Afterward, Sherry becomes an orphan under US government protection, ensuring Leon Kennedy’s involvement as a Government Agent. Yet, her story doesn’t end there – the events of “Resident Evil 2” significantly alter the direction of Sherry’s life and future.

14 years after managing to flee Raccoon City in Resident Evil 2, I found myself back in the heat of things as a playable character in Resident Evil 6. Exposed to the G-virus, I developed extraordinary abilities which set me apart. My new role was that of a Government Agent, tasked with tracking down Albert Wesker’s son, Jake Muller. The need was urgent, as his blood was crucial for creating an antidote. Together, we embarked on this mission, but our journey wasn’t easy; a Bio-Organic Weapon called Ustanak relentlessly pursued us. In the end, we were both captured by Dr. Carla Radames.

After being held captive in a Chinese laboratory, the duo manages to break free and links up with Leon Kennedy. Together, they overcome the C-virus pandemic and send a sample of Jake’s blood to the U.S. government. Sherry Birkin concludes her storyline in the iconic series focused on eliminating bioweapons, expressing hope that she will reconnect with Leon, Claire, and their allies at some point in the future, regardless of how much time passes.

Sherry Birkin Appearance in The Modern RE Series Makes Sense

The current Resident Evil sequence begins a few short years after Resident Evil 6. The initial installments in this updated series introduce Ethan Winters as the protagonist, while managing to interweave elements of the larger narrative and include familiar faces like Chris Redfield. Sherry Birkin’s role as a government agent provides ample motivation for her presence. Intriguingly, the ending of Resident Evil Village’s Shadow of Rose DLC sets the stage for her return, potentially concluding her story arc.

1. In Resident Evil 8 and its Shadow of Rose DLC, Ethan’s extraordinary daughter is being looked after by some organization. It’s not clear if she has chosen to work with them or is being held against her will, but her story mirrors the events that led Sherry to become a U.S. Agent. If Resident Evil 9 (or future games) unfold, it could make sense for Sherry, as a high-ranking Agent, to encounter Rose and provide guidance. They might even join forces to tackle the next significant virus outbreak or infestation. Until more details are released about Resident Evil 9, fans will just have to wait for the official unveiling of the game to learn where the series is going.
