Koshi Nakanishi, the director of Resident Evil Requiem, has hinted that Leon Kennedy, a character first introduced in Resident Evil 2 back in 1998, could remain a part of the series for a long time – potentially even until he’s 70 years old. Leon recently starred in Resident Evil Requiem alongside Grace Ashcroft, and his return was a major draw for players. It seems the character isn’t going anywhere soon.
In the age of the internet, leaks are inevitable, and the return of Leon Kennedy in Resident Evil Requiem was no exception. When Capcom initially revealed the ninth main game in the series at Summer Game Fest in June 2025, they only showcased gameplay featuring Grace Ashcroft, the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft and a desk-bound FBI analyst. Soon after, rumors started spreading that Leon Kennedy would also be returning, after a fourteen-year absence since Resident Evil 6. However, with Leon now approaching 50 years old, many fans are speculating if this might be his final appearance.
Resident Evil Requiem Director Comments on Leon Kennedy’s Future
Fans loved playing as both Grace and Leon in Resident Evil Requiem, as it offered a great balance of classic survival horror – with some truly terrifying moments thanks to Grace – and intense action sequences featuring Leon. Leon’s experience fighting the infected naturally lent itself to a more action-oriented style. However, with Leon now approaching 50, some wondered if Requiem might be his last appearance. Game director Koshi Nakanishi doesn’t believe it will be. In a recent Eurogamer interview, Nakanishi explained that he doesn’t think it’s necessary to replace the series’ well-known characters with younger ones.

The director praised the current version of Leon in Resident Evil: Requiem, calling him a really appealing character. He then hinted at a possible return for Kennedy in the future, even imagining him as an older man – perhaps around 70 years old – and still a compelling character. While this doesn’t guarantee Leon will be in the next Resident Evil game, it suggests Capcom isn’t planning to retire the character anytime soon.
Fans were thrilled to have Leon back, and it’s clearly been a huge success for Capcom. The newest game in the series has received fantastic reviews from both players and critics, currently boasting an impressive 89 on Metacritic. It’s also broken sales records for the company. Last month, Resident Evil Requiem reached 7 million units sold since its February release. Having hit 6 million sales in just 17 days, Resident Evil Requiem is now the fastest-selling game in the entire series.

Rumors suggest Capcom will announce a remake of Resident Evil: Code Veronica in June, likely during Summer Game Fest. A reliable source with a history of accurate Resident Evil leaks has indicated this is the plan. Capcom has had a lot of success with its Resident Evil remakes, so another release between major games like Requiem and a new numbered title would fit their current strategy.
