Season 4 of Re:Zero finds Subaru in the dangerous Augria Sand Dunes, where threats lurk everywhere. After a first episode that focused on setup, episode 2 explodes with the intense, dark fantasy action fans have come to expect from the series. It premiered on April 15, 2026.
Subaru, along with Anastasia and Emilia’s group, is still heading towards the Pleiades Watchtower. Their path is blocked by the dangerous Augria Sand Dunes, which are filled with powerful monsters and a dense, poisonous fog. Despite these overwhelming obstacles, Subaru is completely resolved to reach the Watchtower, no matter the cost.

I watched the latest Re:Zero episode, and Subaru was really hyped about finally crossing the Augria Sand Dunes – he seemed especially happy Rem and Ram were joining us. It was a nice moment seeing Julius calmly petting Patrasche and Joseph, the earth dragons. He explained he does that to keep them relaxed, and it turned out to be a really important detail later on in the episode.
After finishing preparations and saying goodbye, Subaru and his group didn’t hesitate to start moving. While in Mirula, Subaru and Emilia spoke with the tavern owner, who told them the Pleaides Watchtower hasn’t been accessible for four centuries. He understandably urged them to give up on such a risky quest. Still, he suggested they follow a particular bird, believing it might guide them to the correct path towards their goal.
Subaru and Emilia left the tavern and resumed their travels. Julius and Subaru chatted easily, and Meili showed off her power over witch beasts. The group journeyed for days until Anastasia noticed something strange: the sand seemed to be bending space, connecting and separating the dunes from the watchtower. They realized they’d been going in circles, just like Reinhard before them. Luckily, Subaru came up with a plan to finally navigate the Augria Sand Dunes and reach their destination.

Subaru Crosses the Augria Sand Dunes
Subaru’s Plans Worked
Anastasia explained that to get to the Pleaides Watchtower, they had to locate a spatial crack within the Augria Sand Dunes during a specific time known as Sand Time. Subaru proposed using Ram’s powerful clairvoyance to see through the eyes of a witchbeast and find a clear route. Just then, a flock of birds appeared, as the tavern owner had predicted. Subaru instructed Ram to borrow the sight of one of the birds while he and the others fought off the witchbeasts pursuing them.
Subaru’s plan was a success, and the group managed to escape the sand dunes, finding themselves in a field of flowers. However, they were immediately confronted by a group of Oiran bears. Joseph’s sudden anger led to a fight, and as they tried to reach the watchtower, Subaru was struck by a sharp projectile fired from it, resulting in his death.

Subaru’s Return By Death Authority Activates
In the second episode of Re:Zero Season 4, Subaru experiences a shocking double death – and both times, the same person is responsible. He’s killed instantly with a shot to the head, sending him back in time to before a confrontation involving the Oiran Bears. Determined to survive, Subaru tries to lead everyone on a new path to the watchtower, hoping to avoid the attacker who’s already claimed his life twice.
Tragedy strikes again as the mysterious killer claims the lives of Subaru, Patrasche, and Beatrice. The scene is particularly painful, with Beatrice weeping and Subaru coughing up blood before the attack. Before she can even say farewell, the killer strikes, forcing Subaru to use his ability to return from death once more.

After two failed tries, Subaru successfully stopped the Oiran Bears from attacking by using his ability, Invisible Providence, and copying Julius’s method for soothing the earth dragon. This prevented both the bears’ rampage and a surprise, fatal attack from a hidden enemy.
Despite their efforts, the unseen attacker keeps coming, firing a long, needle-like projectile at Subaru. Emilia and Julius manage to block the attack. Ram, using her ability to see the future, warns Subaru he’s being targeted. To survive, Subaru and Beatrice use a powerful magical defense, but doing so damages the distorted space around them.
Re:Zero Season 4 Episode 2 Is Relentlessly Brutal
Season 4, episode 2 of Re:Zero is a significant improvement over the first episode. It features a great opening theme and sequence, a better flow, and well-executed direction. The episode really shines with its exciting fight scenes, emotionally powerful moments—especially with Beatrice—and a noticeably darker tone stemming from Subaru’s repeated deaths. It’s currently the strongest episode of the season.
